The first permanent European settlement in what is now New Iberia was made by Father Aimé Cazenave and his colonists from Quebec in 1763. They founded a trading post called "Morton's Fort" on the bank of the river for fear of Spanish attack. In 1802, General James Ketchum built a fort at present-day New Iberia to keep American traders out and to protect American settlers coming through Baton Rouge from Indian attacks.
In 1844, Frenchman François Maginot built Fort Beauregard opposite Baton Rouge as part of an effort to block American expansion into Canada. The fort served as a point of entry for Americans who arrived by boat along the Mississippi River during the 1840s and 1850s; it was also used as a military base during World War II. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down Fort Beauregard after Union forces landed at Port Hudson to capture nearby Mobile Bay.
During Reconstruction following America's Civil War, many African Americans migrated to Louisiana from Alabama and other southern states looking for work on plantations or in new markets such as Jackson County (now St Tammany Parish). Many white residents moved out of rural areas into larger towns and cities throughout central Louisiana during this time period; however, most black people continued to live in rural areas until after World War II when they were finally granted civil rights by Congress under the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

On October 8 1957 Hurricane Ike struck southeastern Louisiana making landfall just north-northeast of downtown New Orleans east side with winds up to 175 mph (291 km/h); total damage amounted to $166 million with over 50% insidenew Orleans city limits where over 82% ($94 million) worth of residential property went up in smoke or was destroyed outright including entire blocks between Canal Street and Roosevelt Roads. Governor Edwin Edwards declared a stateof emergency due largely to Ike’s destructive power and ordered federal troops onto Bourbon Street throughout downtownNew Orleans

New Iberia, Louisiana is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Jefferson Parish and the most populous parish Measure in Louisiana. New Iberia was founded by French colonists in 1763 as an important commercial center on the Mississippi River. The French city of Iberia became a part of New Orleans after its capture from Spain by Admiral Pierre Dorion during the American Revolution. The area now known as New Iberia was first occupied by Native Americans who hunted and fished along the riverbanks. After France ceded control of Louisiana to Spain in 1802, Spanish settlers arrived to plant sugar cane and other crops near present-day New Iberia and Baton Rouge. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson invaded what is now Jefferson Parish and destroyed all Spanish settlements except for those at Port Hudson on the mouth ofthe Mississippi River. The town at this time consisted only of a small number of dwellings built on piles across from each other on high ground overlooking the river. By 1829, however, it had grown sufficiently that a courthouse, jail, storehouse, and several hundred houses were erected; Saint John's Catholic Church (later called Jacksonville Cathedral), also built at this time; Baptist churches; two schools – one for whites only (St Mary's Academy) and one for colored children (Père Jacques de la Salle School); a cooperage – where men helped build furniture; four churches – including Saint John's Catholic Church – with services conducted both morning and evening; three warehouses used for storage goods such as flour, cotton seed oil, lumber chips etc.; two wharves used for shipping saltpeter etc.; six miles (10 km) of road leading from Baton Rouge to Thibodaux;; In 1830s also saw growth in farming activities with development of corn cribs/maize fields west of present-day New Iberia; establishment of dairy herds near present-day Prairie View Park floods (early 1800s); start production cf gumbo/jalapeño peppers around 1840 which led to eventual designation as “The Pecan Grove” area
New Iberia was founded in 1817 by James Fenton. It became a full-fledged city in 1831. New Iberia experienced a period of growth and development during the late 19th century, thanks in part to its location on the Mississippi River.
