Natchitoches, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and its name comes from the Choctaw word natchi-tok (napkin). The first white person to come to Natchitoches was Samuel Morse in 1814. The town began as a trading post on the riverbank near present day University Park. In 1837, General Andrew Jackson established Fort Jackson here and it became an important military installation until it was abandoned in 1865. Natchitoches grew rapidly during Reconstruction after the Civil War because of its location on both sides of the river. Many cotton plantations were founded here and many people came here for work during Reconstruction. After reconstruction ended, many businesses closed down and poverty increased in Natchitocches. The only successful business in Nachitoches during this time was a grocery store that opened in 1951 by Roy Epps. After Roy Epps died, his son decided to keep the store open and it continued to be run by family members until it closed in 1984. Another successful business owner during this time was Donnie Rowe who ran a restaurant and convenience store called Donny's Diner from 1966 until he sold it to Webbark Chicken earlier this year. In recent years, there has been much growth going on in Nachitoches because of nearby Stroudsburg which has seen several thousand residents move into the town since 2000 due to their job opportunities there. With these new residents comes new businesses such as restaurants, bars, and retail stores which have helped revive downtown Nachitoches and make it more active than ever before!

Natchitoches is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,039 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by General John C. Moore and his cavalry officer son William Purdy Moore as an all-black community named "Natchez". Natchitoches became a white settlement in 1827 when General Andrew Jackson moved the U.S. Military Academy from West Point to Natchitoches after its black students refused to take up arms against their white instructors. In 1865, Confederate general Robert Ewell established himself here after winning a pitched battle with Union forces near Baton Rouge; he then retreated south to join Joseph Johnston's army on the march northward into Louisiana along I-10. On July 12, 1865, while encamped at Natchitocches junction on US 95A (now US 31), Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest learned that Union troops were moving towards him and ordered his men to withdraw; but they continued pursuit and fought a largely successful rearguard action until evening when Forrest was evacuated by Federal forces under Lieutenant General Philip Sheridan; during this engagement two officers of Forrest's division were killed and five others wounded. Natchez became an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and good transportation links provided by the Iberville River valley road system; sugarcane production increased from $5 million in 1870 to $25 million by 1910. In 1916, local farmers organized what would become known as the "New French Protestant Church" (Conseil Frères Chrétiens); it survives today as one of Natchitoches' two churches (the other being Sts Peter & Paul Catholic). In 1970, Hurricane Betsy destroyed most of downtown Natchitoches; since then much of the original architecture has been restored or replaced including parts of both churches which are still used today for religious services."
