Natchitoches, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 5,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. Natchitoches is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and has been a stop on the Underground Railroad. The first rifle stocks were erected in 1827 by Captain John Baptiste Chisum and his son-in-law William Kountz. They were built out of logs placed together with posts driven into the ground to support them. Rifle stocks continued to be used in hunting until about 1840 when they were replaced by shotguns as rifles became more common. In 1892, Captain Ambrose Bierce erected a stockade around his home that served as a base for shooting practice and target practice for local farmers and their children during deer season. After Captain Bierce's death in 1897, his widow passed ownership of the stockade down through her children until it was donated to Natchitoches Historical Museum in 1978. The stockade still stands today and can be visited from April through October during regular museum hours (9 am - 5 pm).
