The name Natchitoches comes from the Choctaw word Nashiti, meaning "place where there are many trees." The community was founded in 1854 by white settlers and was initially called Prairie du Chien. The town is located on land that once belonged to the Caddo Nation and now forms part of Tishomingo Parish in Jefferson County, Louisiana. As early as 1799 French traders reported seeing a large bayou (now known as Lake Pontchartrain) south of present-day Natchitoches with numerous cotton plantations and other rural properties adjacent to it. A grant for 1,000 acres (4 km²) was given to George Washington Parke by President James Kenedy on October 8, 1803; however this parcel did not become part of the town until after its founding on July 12, 1854 when Samuel Prentice donated 100 acres (40 km²). One of the first local businesses was a grocery store operated by Abram Hewitt and family from nearby Iberia Parish beginning in 1865 until it closed down around 1968 due to competition from stores closer to downtown New Orleans. The arrival of female passengers aboard steamboats Lighthouseboat Noontime and Lady Bird Johnson Babe caused excitement throughoutNew Orleans during its early days because they were both middle-aged women who could provide goods unavailable either locally or even within two hours' drive away from their homes at Thatchers Ferry Landing on Frenchman Bayou near Lafayette Cemetery which served as port for riverboats transporting goods upriver into New Orleans during those days On November 7th 1861 Union Pacific Railroad workers began construction of a branch line between Baton Rouge and Shreveport named "Lafayette" which passed just east of present-day Natchitocches along what is now Main Street before continuing southwest under US 190 heading towards Pineville Upon completion of this mainline railroad project some 40 miles long including 4 branches additional street names have been given thus making Navigation Boulevard today but originally only one main street & several side streets running parallel then turning west finally intersecting US 90 about 2 miles northwest & becoming total routing with original 1st St getting its start at modern day Elmwood Road West leading east to Intersection 10th Ave @ Hwy 121 just southwest corner old site Of Florissant Dam
