Colonel John Kirby Hall and his troop of cavalry from Baton Rouge on their way to victory over Native American forces at the Battle of Lake Pontchartrain in 1813. A year later, Captain Nicholas Tichborne organized a party of nine men under his command which traveled upriver to explore new areas adjacent to present-day Natchitoches. They built a trading post at what is today known as Fort Tichborne on December 5, 1814. In 1816–1817, Captain James Ketchum led an expedition upriver from Mobile Bay that discovered and explored much of present-day Natchitoches area including some parts that are now included within the city limits. He also constructed a Fort Tchbourne near present day downtown Natchitocches for military purposes only; it was not until 1830 that he developed it into an official town square with streets and two churches/synagogues built thereon. In 1840, following passage through our river from Illinois via Baton Rouge to Natchez along this route (I-10), General Andrew Jackson's army passed through on its way downstream from New Orleans en route to Washington D C; so too did most members of Congress during subsequent years as they made their way east across the great river valley... On November 3rd 1840 General Jackson's troops burned down Fort Tchbourne completely before entering townsquare where they engaged in various looting etc., taking many items with them such as cannons and horses... Most likely this event helped spur development along I-10 outside of townSquare proper culminating with downtown being established circa 1960... Today, Natchitocches remains a quiet agricultural center renowned for its production of cornmeal and other products used throughout southern Louisiana regions for breadmaking, pasta making and other kitchen tasks such as pies crusts & pastries,... In recent decades much attention has been given to developing greenfield sites within or adjoining our current boundaries for commercial or residential developments; however little progress has been made despite numerous application requests received by both local government entities as well as private developers... However Mayor Bill Barber has had recently stepped up efforts to revive redevelopment efforts by initiating concert series/fairs/events adjacent thereto which have generated some excitement among residents & visitors alike...
