Natchitoches was once a thriving center of trading and commerce in the Louisiana Purchase. The town's first settler, John Broussard, arrived in 1812 and established a small store on the banks of the Natchitoches River. By 1827, Natchitoches had become an important post for trade with the interior of Louisiana. In 1837, Natchitocches became the capital of what would become the Orleans Parish Sheriffate. During World War II, many Natchitoches businesses were utilized to produce munitions for war effort. One such business was The Armoury Company which manufactured pistols and rifles for U.S. troops during World War II. After the war, many local businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from larger companies. In recent years, there has been interest in restoring and re-establishing some of these historic businesses as tourist attractions in Natchitoches town square; however, no definitive plans have yet been put forth to actually revive any one specific business or restore it to its pre-war state. It is likely that future efforts will focus on developing other marketing strategies to generate tourism around this historically significant community while also engaging local citizens in additional historical research and development projects related to their town's cultural heritage

Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia following a three-year military campaign that began with the Battle of Bull Run in March 1862 and ended with Confederate General Joseph Johnston’s surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. This event marked the end of the American Civil War and resulted in over 600 thousand Americans dead or wounded.
