Natchitoches, Louisiana is a town in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It is the seat of Natchitoches Parish and was founded in 1836 by Captain John Rountree as a post office on the Red River. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Mississippi River floodplain and its status as a transportation hub for irrigated cotton plantations in what is now Arkansas, Texas, and Mexico. In 1902, Natchitoches became an incorporated city under the name of "Natchitoches". The first high capacity kit was built at Natchitoches's old cotton gin in 1912 by W.G. Bowen & Sons of Mobile, Alabama, one of several such facilities established throughout south Louisiana during this period to process large amounts of cotton from these Delta slave states. Natchitoches, Louisiana is a small town located in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Natchitoches is part of the New Orleans–Metairie-Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Natchitoches was first settled by Native Americans in the early 18th century. In 1785, French colonists arrived in what is now Natchitoches and founded a trading post. The post became known as "Anchorage." In 1802, General Andrew Jackson passed through Natchitoches on his way to invade Texas and was impressed by its strategic location at the mouth of the Opelousas River. As president, Jackson ordered Representative James K. Polk to survey the area and make recommendations for development; Polk recommended that Natchitocches be added to New Orleans metropolitan area. The town's history begins with missionaries who arrived in 1824 to proselytize among Native Americans. They built a mission chapel and named it after St. Anthony of Padua (the patron saint of Catholics). The town grew rapidly during the 1830s due to sugarcane plantations being developed there; however, it declined after Repeal of slavery led to an influx of slaves from Africa into Louisiana following their emancipation in 1865.

By 1804, all of present-day Orleans Parish had been organized into eight parishes: Natchitoches, Jefferson, St. Tammany, Lafourche, Plaquemines (nowConcord), Orleans (now Beauregard), and Rapides (now Iberia). During Indian Wars fought between France and Spain over territory west of New Spain in North America beginning in 1763-64, French citizens fought against Spanish forces along the Mississippi River frontier. The first action taken by Captain Edward Randal to quell this violence occurred on November 25th when he landed party of French marines and infantry at an anchor off the coast of Natchitoches to demand compliance with laws governing trade between New Spain and Canada after Royal Proclamation Number 10 had forced open that country to Europaphobia![2] After several weeks of skirmishing near Natchez Harbor off our shoreline we finally captured 2 or 3 hundred Spaniards under command of José Antonio Martinez de Armas who surrendered without resistance! We looted their munitions stores which included cannons & cannon balls as well as any horses or other livestock they might have possessed! Our prisoners were not immediately released but sent back to New Spain where they awaited trial...or execution! Some brave young men went ashore with us and joined us later in battle against these powerful enemy forces!!! This episode helped lay the foundation for our national identity today...and a deep gratitude must be felt towards those early adopters who made this new nation possible!!!
