Smith Museum and as home to the world's largest collection of Confederate memorabilia. It has also been actively involved in various community projects, including creating a greenway system and providing housing to low-income residents. The town was founded by Fannie Lou Hamer in 1884 as a cotton plantation community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The following year, it became part of the newly formed parish of Orleans. At first, Natchitoches depended on water rights from upstream plantations for irrigation purposes; however, this source of revenue dwindled after new pipelines were constructed nearby. In 1917, local citizens voted to incorporate as a village; however, due to financial limitations, Natchitocches never achieved full self-sufficiency until well into the 21st century. Today, Natchitoches still enjoys strong cultural ties with its antebellum heritage and experienced significant growth during Hurricane Katrina's aftermath in 2005. Natchitoches became an important hub for trade with Texas and other parts of the Southwestern United States during the antebellum period; its cotton gin made it one of the leading cotton producers in southeastern America. The town was destroyed by a fire on November 11, 1886, which destroyed many homes and businesses including several churches and schools as well as much speculation from traders about where the fire might have started. The cause remains unknown but has been variously blamed on arson or overloading containers on a local canal boat

The first permanent settler in what is now Natchitoches was Captain John Strother, who arrived on November 26, 1799 with his family from Bathurst Parish, Louisiana. He built a small log cabin on what is now River Road near present-day Natchitoches High School for himself and his family. It is possible that other early settlers also lived here at this time: Captain David Vaughan may have landed on December 2, 1800 from Lachine Parish; George Washington Harper came aboard an American sloop called USS Constitution on February 14, 1801 from Iberia Parish; Richard Henderson brought his shipwrecked party ashore at Folsom Bay about two miles east of where Natchitocches sits on July 11, 1800; Jasper Parrish led an expedition upriver to explore new territory around Lake Pontchartrain on September 3rd, 1800; Josiah Henson set out from New Orleans with five men on October 12th 1800 expressly to locate Kelly’s Prairie (later known as Stroudsburg); they reached Acadia settlement just north ofpresent-day Baton Rouge about four weeks later In 1802 Captain John Strother's son James took over running the house and farmstead while their father traveled to Arkansas Valley for some work related to railroad construction project Thereafter James "Jasper" Strother ran the place until he died circa 1840 when it passed into ownership of son Nathaniel "Nathaniel" Hardwick who married Lydia Thatcher Hardwick sometime between 1840 - 1860 It should be noted that there were no towns or settlements established anywhere near present day Natchitocches until after Indian Removal Act of 1830 decreeing all Native Americans must leave their lands within ten days or face execution During late 1820s/early 1830s many people living along riverbanks upstream from present site migrated here looking for new land due to harsh winters conditions existing then & many were successful including Nathaniel Hardwick & others Eventually old riverbank sites became home to numerous families & descendants continue living here today
Natchitoches is a town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Natchitoches is founded by French colonists in 1719 and named after an Indian word meaning "clear water." The first white settler in Natchitoches was Pierre Boudreaux, who arrived in 1722. He built a small cabin on the banks of the Orinoco River. By 1724, Boudreaux had organized a band of French colonists and named them Natchitoches after their native river port of Nouvelle-Orléans. In 1729, another Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de La Salle, discovered land to the south of what is now Natchitoches and began to explore it. He named his new colony Saint Landry (later Orleans) because he found land that was both swampy and rich in timber. In 1785, François De Grave established a post office at Natchitoches for settlers seeking passage to America on the Mississippi River flood boats. The post office operated until 1810 when it was moved inland to Beauregard Barracks on I-10 near Baton Rouge. In 1818, General Andrew Jackson incorporated Natchitocches as a parish within Livingston County; it remained part of that county until 1959 when it became part of Rapides Parish within New Orleans City Limits. In 1865–66 Confederate General John Crain's army invaded north Louisiana while under Federal command; they overran most of central and eastern Livingston Parish including parts of Natchitoches before turning back towards Baton Rouge crossing into Rapides Parish just outside present day Natchitoches (the only time this happened during the entire war). Aftermath: many homes were destroyed or taken down as Union troops burned everything they could find inside plantations such as sugarcane fields and rice paddies; all slaves were released unharmed but some were put into refugee camps near Shreveport until Freedmen's Bureau agents reached them in 1870 with plans to return them to their families once Reconstruction ended
