Natchitoches is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Caddo Parish and its second-largest municipality after Shreveport. Natchitoches is located on the banks of the Mississippi River about 30 miles (48 km) south of New Orleans. The first French colonists who established what is now Natchitoches were men from Normandy named Louis de la Salle and his brother Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne. The area that became Natchitoches was part of Iberia Parish until 1803 when it was transferred to Caddo Parish under Governor John Randolph. In 1804, Père Antoine Menard founded a Catholic church on land he had rented from La Salle for secular purposes. It was called St.-Jacques Cathedral after Jacques de Montilla, an early settler and friend of Père Antoine Menard. A school was also built on this site in 1805 by Father José Gomez y Urtubey and Brothers; a convent followed in 1861 following orders from Pope Leo XIII to establish religious education within the parish's Catholic community as an antidote to "the licentiousness" prevailing among European Catholics at that time In 1865, following the American Civil War, Natchitoche became part of Confederate Arkansas Territory before being annexed into New Orleans proper as 3rd Ward on November 1, 1870 . At this point African Americans were considered citizens of both cities with voting rights onlyexistent within Caddo Parish . However they continued to live segregated behind white lines until integrated services were available starting in 1949 . On July 15th 1906 Mayor John Witherspoon dedicated a new parkette adjacent to St.-Jacques Cathedral which would later become known as Riverside Park
Natchitoches was founded in 1834 by Captain John A. Bogue and his wife, Martha C. Bogue, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town grew rapidly after cotton plantations were established in the area and Natchitoches became a center for cotton production and trade. Natchitoches was also known for its slave trading industry and for its annual Stonington fair which attracted large numbers of visitors from all over Louisiana. In 1863, during the American Civil War, Natchitoches was occupied by Confederate forces and many of its residents took up arms against their Union opponents. After the war ended, Natchitocches slowly regained its former prominence as a commercial center and a stop on the Charente- Mobile Railroad.
