Natchitoches, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Orleans in the central part of Louisiana. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The population was 5,543 at the 2010 census. The name Natchitoches comes from an Illinois Indian word meaning " muddy ground." The first white settlers in what is now Natchitoches were Jackson and his family who arrived in 1794. They named their land Natchitoches after one of their own children, Nathanael Jackson. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson led a military expedition against Native Americans here and discovered oil wells that would become one of America's most valuable assets. When he became president in 1828, he ordered Colonel John Sibley to explore for oil near this location and found two crude fields which resulted in Natchitocches becoming an important stop on World's Columbian Exposition exposition held at Chicago in 1893-1895. The town quickly grew thanks to its many industry which included Dredge & Dock Company (forerunner of today's BP), American Tobacco Company (ATC), US Steel Corporation (USS) and Tishman Stapleton Realty Trust (TSRT). These businesses employed many local men and women who made Natchitoches one of America's most vibrant towns during the Progressive Era when social revolution was taking place all around her. Many famous local people such as Will Rogers, Roy Burns and Fenton Henderson lived and worked here including William Jennings Bryan while Huey Long served as mayor from 1928-1937; also Seelye Carpentier ran for office twice but lost both times because she could not compete with white politicians who had more money and power than she did. After Long's death his widow Eleanor Roosevelt moved into President Franklin D Roosevelt's presidential palace here until her death 14 years later at 95 years old making her one of America’s longest living presidents ever! Today there are several thousand residents living within walking distance or car travel to various shopping centers, restaurants, medical facilities as well as other cultural attractions like Freedom Hall where IMAX presentations are staged nightly outside a large glass cube that dominates downtown skyline view for those interested in experiencing Hollywood’s latest blockbuster movie releases up close! In 1915-16, during World War I–1916 (the Great Depression), many farmers across south central Louisiana went on strike to demand higher prices for their crops due to overproduction caused by extenuating circumstances such as lack of available land or low prices from world markets; this led directly to the Black New Deal which lasted from 1929 through 1933 under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal administration began significant change throughout southernLouisiana including Natchitoches After Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29th 2005 devastating much of southcentral Louisiana including Natchitoche’scharitable organizations( churches) like Our Lady Of Charity Ministries (OHLM) were completely destroyed leaving behind more than 100% housing damage with estimated losses totaling $40 million dollars Most churches have never been rebuilt however Many new homes have been built specifically for these Churches now called “Church Homes” A recent project being done right now is rehabilitating these Church Homes into living quarters once again giving back to these incredible places that once housed so many families who are now homeless or self-sufficient
