The free people of color were rounded up and put into wagons and driven away into what is now Rapides Parish while their masters took refuge in nearby Alexandria parish; this incidents is known as the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

These wartime activities also helped contribute to increase population size by up to 100%. In recent decades there has been significant redevelopment taking place within town limits1: primary among these are plans for an indoor theme park called "Aquatica", a new shopping mall called "CenturyLink", larger senior citizens housing developments called "The Park"2 as well as numerous small businesses that have opened up around town since Katrina hit in 2005: many relocated from other parts of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina’s landfall3.
