Natchitoches is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The settlement of Natchitoches was founded by French settlers in 1718 on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed Fort Moultrie in Mobile Bay to clear the way for his march on Washington D.C., and artillery from Natchitoches shot down two US Marines as they landed ashore on July 4th, 1803. The site of today's Natchitoches became anvil for many local industries such as sugarcane farming and manufacturing until Hurricane Katrina made these endeavors difficult or impossible. Today, parts of town are still home to small farmers while others are built up with high-rise apartment complexes and shopping malls that have removed most of the agricultural production that once worked hereabouts. However, there are still some key businesses remaining including a nuclear power plant operated by Southern Company (now Entergy) which closed in 2009 due to increasing public opposition to atomic energy; and a popular seafood restaurant chain called Lobster House which continues to ply its trade despite being evacuated during Katrina because it was not designed for storm surge flooding like other businesses within walking distance were. Natchitoches was founded on the banks of the Mississippi River by French colonists in 1718. The town was named for General Natchitoches, who had led an expedition against the Spanish in 1700. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Natchitoches was burned by American forces as part of a campaign to quash British resistance to U.S. expansionism. The town has since recovered and is a major cultural and tourist destination in southeastern Louisiana. The first people to live in what is now Natchitoches were Native Americans who hunted game near the confluence of the rivers that form present-day Natchitoches Parish and Jefferson Parish counties. By 1718, French colonists had settled at Fort des Ormes on what is now East Baton Rouge Parish, and began trading with local tribes. In 1736, Father Jean Baptiste de la Salle built a small church near where today's Lafayette Avenue crosses the Mississippi River. In 1800, John Marshall became one of the first white men to live in what is now Mobile County when he moved from Illinois to become postmaster for Bayou d'Alma; he soon discovered that this isolated area could not support his population alone and sent word out for investors to build him a road connecting Mobile with Pensacola (then Spanish Florida). A group of businessmen responded and erected a toll bridge over bayous Lafourche (now Clearwater) and Stroud (now New Orleans) Rivers on April 12, 1800; they called their new settlement "Natchez". The town grew rapidly from its initial handful of settlers into an important commercial center during the antebellum period; it served as both capital of Confederate States Secretary Aaron Burr's district during his trial for treason in 1851-52 and as governor pro tempore of Louisiana under James Kenedy from 1840-41 until his resignation due to health concerns two years later. After Kenedy's death, power reverted back to Governor Nicholas Biddle until 1855 when Charles Sumner took office; he abolished slavery within three years of taking office despite strong opposition from slaveholders throughout much of southern America. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Texas seceded from Mexico while most African Americans remained behind bars or outsideof government control; this situation complicated efforts by northern officials like President Abraham Lincoln to implement social justice policies throughout much Southern America through executive order agricultural regulations known as "New South Order".
