On November 3, 1892, Natchitoches was the site of one of the most dramatic events in Louisiana’s history. A group of white men and boys from Natchitochesarmed with shotguns and knives attacked a black townspeople who were trying to protect their homes. The attackers killed ten people and also made off with several rifles, shotguns, and knives. This event is often called the Natchitoches Massacre.

Natchitoches, Louisiana (pronounced "n-a-chitch-tuh-keh") is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. Natchitoches is located on the Mississippi River and bordered by Iberville Parish to the east, St. Bernard Parish to the south, Trinity Parish to the west and north, and Bossier Parish to the northwest. The Choctaw Nation has inhabited what is now Natchitoches for over 350 years. French traders first arrived in 1669 and founded a trading post here; this became known as Natchitoches Plantation after Captain Pierre Le Moyne built it on an island in 1711. The first white settlers were Yankees who came from Connecticut in 1810 primarily to trade with Native Americans; they named their new community "Natchez". In 1821 the U.S. Army abandoned its plans for a canal through Lafourche Parish but decided instead to build Fort Donelson near present day Baton Rouge; American forces under General Andrew Jackson attacked this fort on November 25, 1825 and destroyed it during what is now known as "Natchez Massacre". After this event native people began refer to Natchitoches as "Alibamu" or "New Alibamu". In 1830 President James Kenedy ordered Colonel John Fenton's brigade of cavalrymen (known as Lafayette's Brigade) to move upriver from Villemarin against hostile Indians near Prairie du Chien; these men later became known as the Light Horse of America because of their participation in these famous battles of Mount Pleasant which ended with British General Robert Rogers' victory over American forces at Battle Of Black Hawk On October 7th 1834). The area around present day Natchitoche was organized into three parishes: St Bernard (the original parish), Iberville (created by merging parts of St Bernard and Iberville parishes), and Trinity (created by combining parts of St Bernard, Iberville, and Trinity parishes). On July 1st 1860 all three parishes were combined into one parish under Puerto Rican Catholic leadership called Our Lady of Lourdes Church District No 2 which included all that now makes up Jefferson Parish. On January 1st 1930 Baptist preacher Revue Beal moved his church from Frenchman Bayouhis Island off southern Jefferson Parrish into Monticello Point Road just inside Natchitoche limits unincorporated area formerly belonging to BossierParish government unit called East Texas State University Campus Campus Extension where he had been preaching since 1924! He dedicated his church building adjacent thereto on February 5th 1930 then opened it for services that same day! Reverend Beal helped found Pine Bluff Baptist Church thereon on December 13th 1951 soon followed by Springdale Baptist Church thereon on January 6th 1956 both churches remain active today! All 3 churches are part of First United Methodist Episcopal Zion congregation led by Pastor Rick Green currently! In 1893 two brothers named Wm Henson & Sam Henson started a grocery store in downtown Natchitochs selling fresh produce direct from their farmstead plus meats stored behind their house.. They also operated a boat dock across from Broad Street wharf across form Mobile bayou & served customers outfitted w/o refrigerators thru 1925 when they built cellars below their home (& still do so!) Wm Henson passed away 1927 while Sam managed store until his death 1988.; their son Orson took over running store until its sale in 1995.) Around 1920 Wm married Addie Mae Steele also from Frenchman Bayouhis Island off southern Jefferson Parrish & together them raised 2 children--Addie Mae divorcedOrson in 1987 & married her sister Betty Sue Snell another native daughter born at Frenchman Bayouhis Island off southern Jefferson Parish circa 1945.) From about 1925 thru about 1970 most stores sold items thru mail order only thru Mrs Reese’s Daughter Connie’s Packers truck service out front tho company name changed several times including “Pine Bluff Grocery Co., Inc” thru 1978 when family lost interest due too business changes within own family.) By 1960 most local merchants stopped carrying mail order items & went direct more often though company name kept changing including “Cafeteria Workers Union Postal Service Store #1″ thru 1984 when management changed ownership again becoming Dept Stores Associates—owned&operated by JulieAnn Smith current owner since 1996))) Today much local business operations still via mail order tho company name changed many times) In 1975 Mrs Smith purchased old Courtyard Storage Building next door used it mostly for storage purposes before demolition beganacles starting May 1998) As early 2000s plan called for rebuilding entire facility using funds previously earmarked forCourtyard Storage Building renovation project however final Plans call for merely repairing portions thereof not demolishing it altogether)) Today virtually every locally owned businesses are privately held though some public agencies such as Parks Department still have postal service delivery facilities within easy proximity
