In 1836, when New Orleans was acquired by Mexico City as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Natchitocches became part of Confederate Texas Territory under General Sam Houston. When Texas seceded from the Union in 1865, Natchitocches reverted to Confederate control until US troops regained it following his death at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg on April 9th 1865. After Reconstruction ended with passage of new Civil Rights legislation (the Tillman Act) by Congress on November 12th 1865, African Americans began to regain power within local government as white people were barred from becoming elected officials or owning land/possessing firearms without special permission from white supremacists like General Robert E Lee and others responsible for maintaining segregation throughout much southern US society thereafter. On January 7th 1870 Louisiana statehood was granted to both parts of America including Natchitocches making it one-seventh Anglo American colony that would ultimately fall victim to economic development opportunities enjoyed by other areas such as Baton Rouge while also losing some key cultural amenities which doomed it economically soon after annexation such as alternative education options available outside city limits while keeping black residents disenfranchised until AFTER integration efforts began earnestly throughout most southeastern US communities upon Brown v Boardinghouse decision reached December 3rd 1954 along with full civil rights voting privileges accorded African Americans beginning February 6th 1955 effective statewide thereby finally putting an end once and for all to centuries long Jim Crow laws remaining operative only among whites majority areas still extant today mainly due largely to police power exercised primarily against unarmed black males particularly away from populated urban centers where formal justice could be accessed through legal proceedings rather than passively observing discriminatory practices nightly or daily
