By 1830, there were over 100 houses and 1,500 people living in Natchitoches proper and its annexes: Iberia Parish to the east; Lafourche Parish to the west; and Union County to the north. In 1840, a post office was established at Natchitoches with John Caddo as its first mail carrier; it continued operation until 1862. In 1855, Drury College opened up shop here as a preparatory school for Sugar Land High School; it closed in 1959 but remains extant as a cultural landmark within Natchitoches itself. After Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29th 2005, many small businesses were destroyed or looted throughout this parish including several stores on Bienville Street such as Big Daddy's music store which still stands today withstood almost total destruction however all contents inside were lost save for 3 guitars which are currently stored at another location within town limits while reconstruction efforts continue apace
