Natchitoches, Louisiana is a small town in the US state of Louisiana. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. The village was founded by French settlers in 1699 and named for Jean-Baptiste Natchitochee, an officer in the French colonial army who had served in North America. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Natchitoches was Captain John Smith on July 5, 1714. He built a cabin on the current site of Natchitoches Elementary School and called it " Fort Hill." In 1719, Captain James Cook visited this region and made two surveys of south Louisiana which included this parish. The first comprehensive map of that area was prepared by Pierre-Antoine Lavoie in 1791 and named after him, Jean Baptiste Natchitochee Parish. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's brigade invaded Mobile Bay with 1,500 men and sailed upriver to take control of the Mississippi River from Spanish traders. On November 3rd they arrived at New Orleans and disembarked their troops at Margarita Island before moving inland towards Baton Rouge where they camped for three days before crossing into Indian Territory under General Andrew Jackson's command on November 5th near Alexandria Bridge just east of modern day Thibodaux Not long afterwards (November 10), elements Confederate forces led by General Beauregard attacked Jackson's base camp about 12 miles southwest of Alexandria Bridge; here Confederate cavalry opened fire uponAmerican infantry who were using pickets to screen them while artillery bombardedJackson's positions from a distance Because Jackson could not risk being flanked he ordered his division commanders to withdraw without engaging the enemy This event became known as "the retreat" or "the crisis". Although outnumbered more than five to one numerically it seems that Confederate generals decided to fight rather than flee when faced with such overwhelming odds
