The history of scopes in Morgan City, Louisiana goes back to the early 1800’s. The first scopes were used to view stars and planets. In 1825, Dr. John James Audubon imported a telescope from England and started using it in his home in Jackson Parish. In 1835, he donated his telescope to the New Orleans Academy of Sciences and Arts where it has been used ever since. In 1892, a group of men from Lafayette, Louisiana founded the Lafayette Observer-Telegraph Company with the goal of providing an English-language daily newspaper for Acadians living in Lafayette Parish. The company was purchased by The Tribune Company in 1902 and continued publication until 1935 when it merged with The Times-Picayune Newspaper Company to form what is now known as The Times-Picayune Publishing Corporation. At its peak, the Tribune Company had over 100 employees and published over 20 newspapers throughout Louisiana including Morgan City. During World War II, many American troops were stationed in Lafayette Parish; one such soldier was Sgt. George Aiken who brought a spotting scope into combat during World War II after hearing about it on CBS’ “This Is Your Life” TV program (see below). After the war ended, Aiken restored his old telescope which he used at home to view astronomical objects again (see photo). Morgan City native Edmond Hirschman became interested in astronomy while attending college at Tulane University where he met physicist Edwin Hubble (1904-1985). In 1840, when New Orleans was created as an independent city under territorial jurisdiction, Morgan City became part of it and shared in its wealth and development; it retains this distinction to this day. During World War II, Morgan City played host to various military installations including Naval Station Annapolis (now Joint Base Annapolis), Naval Air Station Opa Locka (now Naval Air Station Jacksonville), and Marine Corps Air station Miramar before being evacuated during Hurricane Katrina. Afterward, local businesses started up to rebuild with little assistance from either the federal government or state governments; however much has changed since then for Morgan City residents: most notably the opening of Interstate 10 which bypasses town entirely cutting off much needed commerce and employment opportunities within minutes’ walk of most homes while also stranding many commuters inside their cars during rush hour traffic congestion outside Loop 610 northbound/southbound Exit 8A near downtown New Orleans
