He named it La Galleria after New Orleans' famous streets grid system which he hoped would inspire residents to move to Louisiana and help improve infrastructure there. In 1870-71, La Galleria became an important stop on stagecoaches between New Orleans and Baton Rouge because it lay just outside of what was then known as "the racist's" limits - areas that were still segregated by race even though Reconstruction ended two years earlier. A large cotton plantation called Pemberton Springs stood across the street from La Galleria until 1901 when it burned down; this event helped spur development around that corner into downtown Morgan City proper starting in the late 1800s thanks to entrepreneurs such as Jens Ludwig (1846-1924), Jules Ferry (1857-1937), and others who came along with it including Frederick Sanger (1859-1937) This transformation also helped Morgan City become a center for education; notably, one of its first schools was opened in 1881 by Judge John Hoggard (1792-1863) who served as mayor of Jackson Parish from 1862 until his death in 1865 following a year-long trial that followed passage of General Andrew Johnson's Emancipation Proclamation emancipating all slaves within Confederate territory lines.
