Many local residents traveled to Washington D.C., where he had resided since 1797 to pay their respects and celebrate his death since he had been considered one of America's greatest presidents ever at that time - even surpassing George Washington according to some historians! A memorial service was held at Fortieth Regiment Armory where Jackson's coffin lay in state before being transported back to Jackson's plantation near Natchez for burial under full military honors!
