Morgan City is a small town in Jackson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Shreveport–Bossier City, LA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Morgan City was founded in 1892 by J.D. Morgan and his brothers John and Jameson Morgan as a cotton plantation near present-day Monroe. It became an important center for cotton production in Louisiana because of its location on the lower Mississippi River floodplain and its access to water resources. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded New Orleans and destroyed much of the city before withdrawing to Mobile Alabama. Reconstruction began in Louisiana after the war ended and Morgan City emerged as an important center for African American commerce and education; it also became a major political center during this period with strong Democratic Party ties. In 1921, J.D."Red" Leach formed the first black political party in Louisiana with help from white businessmen; he served as mayor from 1925 to 1931 and 1933 to 1937.
