The town was founded in 1802 by Captain John Morgan and his wife, Jane Randolph, as a trading post on the Biloxi River. It grew rapidly during the 1820s and 1830s because of its trade with Native Americans and its access to rich inland resources such as salt water marshes, cotton fields, and natural gas reserves. By 1840, Morgan City had a population of 5200 people. In 1849, Captain John Morgan died suddenly while exploring new oilfields in Texas; his widow continued to run the trading post until her death in 1851. In 1863, Confederate General Braxton Bragg occupied Morgan City for several weeks after he captured New Orleans from Union forces under General Robert E. Lee; during this time, many supplies were smuggled into town through the nearby bayou systems. The following year saw the opening of an oil refinery at Bayou Sara near present-day Baton Rouge; this helped to spur economic development in Morgan City throughout the mid nineteenth century. The town was renamed for General James Longstreet on November 15, 1886; Longstreet had been commander of Confederate forces during the Siege of Petersburg (1864).
