Morgan City is an incorporated city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It was named for General Lafayette and his brother-in-law Major General Andrew Jackson. The first white settler in Morgan City was James Hogg, who arrived in 1795. In 1821, Captain John Loring founded a small post on the banks of the Arkansas River near present day Carrollton. By 1824 it had grown to about eighty residents when it merged with Uniontown to form Morgan City Township. A post office called "New Orleans" served as the township's only facility from 1825 until 1840. In 1845, General Zachary Taylor organized a brigade of soldiers under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer during the Mexican–American War and ordered him to capture Santa Fe Railroad Depot at Bowie Creek near present day Baton Rouge; however, upon reaching Bowie Creek he found that the depot had been abandoned several days earlier and no troops were stationed there to attack him. He then turned his army back towards MexicoCity and camped outside of New Orleans while waiting for reinforcements which never arrived; this event is generally considered one of the most romantic moments in American military history because it demonstrated Taylor's incompetence as an commander and also helped lead to his impeachment proceedings two years later by President Ulysses S Grant. On February 1, 1861 Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina without warning or provocation from any side; this event is known as "The Day of Infamy." On April 12 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House after four days of fighting following mass desertions by all his commanders including Johnston; this event is also known as "The Second Battle of Bull Run." Morgan City became an incorporated town on December 21st, 1886 following a vote by its citizens against secessionism during the Spanish–American War which lasted from 1898-1901. During World War I (1914-1918), Morgan City furnished supplies and men for service in France along with other towns in Jefferson Parish such as West Feliciana Parish and St Tammany Parish; these actions are sometimes cited as being responsible for saving New Orleans from total destruction due to aerial bombardment during World War II which began on September 2nd, 1941.(See Operation Neptune's Spear) In 1951 Hurricane Betsy destroyed much of downtown Morgan City with up to 80% loss of life yet no damage done to any structures within or beyond its limits leaving only extensive flooding inside what was left standing.; this incident is also commonly cited as being one reason why Morgan City voted overwhelmingly not to secede from Louisiana during the early 1960s when many other towns did so.(See Refusal Of Surrender) On October 14th 2017 Hurricane Irma passed through Morgan City uneventfully but caused significant damage both inside and outside its boundaries resulting in over $140 million worth in losses!
