Morgan City is a town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The French named the town for General Morgan who had fought in America during the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1832, and by 1840 there were twenty-six residents. In 1846, land sales began that would result in Morgan City becoming a parish seat. The first courthouse was built in 1852 and most of what is now downtown Morgan City were developed between 1897 and 1912 when the tracks along Rampart Street were widened to form an avenue called Boulevard des Arts (now Canal Street). During World War II, Morgan City became an important munitions production center as it housed three plants that produced nearly all of France's supply of artillery ammunition and other war materials. In recent years, Morgan City has seen resurgence as a small-town community with a focus on agriculture and local manufacturing; its primary economic activity remains farming though some businesses have moved into new buildings constructed around Commerce Boulevard near LSU baseball diamonds and other sports venues. Morgan City is a small town located in the parish of Morgan City, Louisiana. The population was 1,882 at the 2010 census. The history of Morgan City dates back to 1819 when it was named for General James Morgan, an officer in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. It was known as a farming and fishing village until World War II, when it became a steel mill and munitions manufacturing center. In 2000, Morgan City was designated a National Historic Landmark for its significance in cotton culture, businessman George Washington Carver's life, and the development of modern liberalism in America. The community is situated on a bend in the Mississippi River where it joins with Jefferson Parish to form Southwest Louisiana. It began as an agricultural village that grew around two plantations: one owned by Captain John Pemberton and another run by Judge Emmett Cullom. These estates were later combined into one collective until they were sold off in 1827 to Major John Covington who moved his family there from Memphis. From Covington's time through Reconstruction (1868-1877), Morgan City functioned as a rural outpost on both sides of the riverbanks near Baton Rouge while trying to keep up with Jonesboro on the east side and New Orleans on the west side. It wasn't until after World War II that Morgan City truly came into its own as an industrial center production line across from Interstate 10bridge over which new families like those of Vernon Ladd started moving uptown starting out making parts for cars before branching out into other businesses including plastics manufacture and textiles production among others such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company, Coca Cola Bottling Plants etcetera; thus becoming what is today known as "The Third Coast."
