Morgan City is a small city in the northwestern part of Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morgan County. The history of Morgan City goes back to 1836 when its namesake, General James K. Polk, purchased 4 square miles (10 km²) in what is now downtown Morgan City from the Chickasaw Nation for $1 million dollars. As Polk developed his new town, he named it after himself and also erected a grand courthouse and public buildings. The first store in Morgan City opened on December 12, 1836. The town quickly became known as a center for cotton exports due to its strategic location near the Mississippi River and its abundance of fertile land. By 1840, the town had acquired a large schoolhouse and other public buildings necessary for full development as a commercial center. In 1848, General John Crain donated land to build an agricultural college which would become Tulane University; this gift made Morgan City one of Tulane's main financial contributors during that century (eventually becoming part of LSU). During World War I, many businesses closed up shop in order to support military production; however, most reopened soon after hostilities ended thanks to increased demand from consumers and available supplies from abroad. However, by 1921 only 10% of all businesses still thrived despite difficult economic times; by 1929 less than half that percentage remained open including almost all within downtown Morgantown proper where most business had relocated since 1926 when Morgantown's original mill district declined because of competition from larger cities such as New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Nevertheless, during good times Downtown Morgantown produced between 100% and 150% more jobs than any other area in the state while providing much needed retail services; however during hard times these percentages plummeted below 50%. Starting with World War II until recently there has been significant development within Downtown Morgantown but although much progress has been made overall quality-of-life concerns remain throughout much portions especially around Woodward Avenue which suffers greatly from inadequate sidewalks and deteriorated infrastructure including water mains dating back to19th century! In recent years several organizations have sprung up attempting to address some or all aspects thereof: 1) Downtown Morgantown Neighborhood Association - A non profit community organization formed in 2002 who are responsible for maintaining law enforcement/safety patrols outside business districts along Woodward Avenue; 2) West Monroe Development Authority - A private nonprofit corporation established in 2006 tasked with redeveloping west Monroe Street between Alumni Drive & US 65 which houses over 20 struggling restaurants/cafes plus two banks looking for space inside an existing building.; 3) Greater New Orleans Community Development Corporation - Another private nonprofit corporation created earlier this decade with responsibility for redevelopment southwest corner Interstate 10 & Wilkinson Boulevard incorporating over 350 housing units surrounding ample parkland
