Morgan City, Louisiana is a town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by James Denton and his wife Rachel Carson Denton. It was named for General Morgan (1786-1844), an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and other conflicts. The first post office in Morgan City opened on July 1, 1837. The name of the town has been changed several times since its founding including to Maple Grove, Prairie View, and finally to what it currently occupies. In 1892, the Lumbermen's Association built a sawmill on the Iberville River near present day Morgan City. This mill continued production until 1971 when it closed due to competition from newer mills in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. In 2006, Hurricane Katrina destroyed many of these older mills including the Lumbermen's Association Mills which remain standing as a reminder of that time period. The area now known as Morgan City was settled by French Canadians who arrived during the early 1800s looking for land grants with opportunities for farming and commerce that were available only within New France Province. By 1830 all but 6 families living in what is now downtown had moved out because of difficulties obtaining farmland or other types of business opportunity within their new homeland; this left only 5 men working at a small store - one carpenter/cordwainer able to provide basic needs such as food and clothes for about 25 people - just four years after land grant signing began across Louisiana Territory: "As soon as these applications were received...the officers set about making surveys according to instructions they had received." On July 2nd 1840 Pierre Laclau founded an encampment called Grosse Pointe aux Boeufs (Great Point aux Goats) some 12 miles east-northeast of where Main Street meets Interstate 10 today outside Metairie LA On October 15th 1840 Laclau sold 7 leagues or square miles along banks of Mobile Bayou [now I-10] from his holdings near Biloxi MS back to 4 white men under contract with Govt for 999 years provided each person resided thereon & improved their stockpile yearly At $3 per acre resold at public auction on December 16th 1840 lots cost $5 per share total value above 20 acres would amount $2 million pounds sterling Today we have over 100 acres still being developed most recently Bogue Plantation backing onto Mobile Bayou

The population of Morgan City peaked at 10,000 in 1860 but declined rapidly due to various factors including disease and deprivation caused by warring Indian tribes. By 1900, the population had shrunk to 1,100 people. Today, Morgan City is a small rural community with few resident businesses other than agricultural operations and a grocery store. Its only major industry is agriculture which continues to be its mainstay economy despite competition from neighboring towns that have more industrial activity such as Monroe and Alexandria.
