Morgan City is a community in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The first Morgan City was founded by Frenchmen in 1718 as an outpost on the mouth of the river Petite côte (Little Coast), about east of present-day Morgan City. From this location a series of forts were built over time to guard against British attack and protect trade between New Orleans and Havana, Cuba. In 1803, Colonel James Kenedy organized a militia unit to quell what he called "a popular uprising" against Spanish rule in north Louisiana; some 985 men from 21 different parishes mobilized under Kenedy's command. In what became known as the Battle of Baton Rouge, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army defeated Kenedy's force with heavy losses: 4 missing or dead, 10 captured or taken prisoner, and 30 killed or wounded. Santa Anna ordered his forces to retreat northward across Iuka River before turning back south and besieging Mobile for two months. In 1805 Captain John Laclede chartered a vessel called "Natchez" from Nicholas Noel de St Croix toload troops and supplies at Mobile for General Allenby's Egyptian Expeditionary Force fighting Napoleon I; Laclede had met La Salle when he served as master-of-the-house aboard USS "Plymouth". On board Laclede discovered coal deposits which led him to invest in land near present day Morgan City proper; he named his new settlement after himself, Sr., because he could not find anyone else who would take on the name of their fatherland (Laclede had been born in France). Captain John Bogue took possession of the town site on March 8, 1811; Bogue laid out streetscape according to French plans and named them after then Governor Claiborne Jackson (1783–1846) and President James Kiddle Howe (1795–1868). By 1840 there were 1123 residents living within limits set by Bogue – more than one third of all Jefferson Parish residents – including 220 Germans (mainly descendants of German immigrants who had settled in Louisiana during the early 1800s). 2nd Ward Alderman Hosea Butler was elected Mayor in 1834 but resigned due to health concerns three years later On July 29th 1861 Union soldiers burned downSaint Louis Cathedral located just east of today’s downtown Morgan City skyline while Confederate Soldiers watched

Morgan City was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and his wife, Lady Jane. The town became an important stop on the path of the Louisiana Purchase from Spain. It was named for Colonel John Morgan, an American Revolutionary War veteran and a member of Congress from Virginia. The town’s first store opened in 1816. In 1837, it received a post office with the name of “New Orleans.” The postal office was renamed “Morgan City” in 1907 after General Electric co-founder Joseph J. Morgan donated $10,000 to the townspeople to help promote electric power in the area. In 1915, MorganCity merged with neighboring Jefferson Parish to form Morgan Parish Consolidated government. In 1922, Morgan City also became home to America's first television station when KVUE-TV (channel 3) was built on land adjacent to the community center. KVUE remained operational until 1984 when it converted to digital TV and moved its operations to New Orleans proper. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made MorganCity his summer residence while he toured Louisiana during the height of World War II as part of his Great Society program designed to increase agricultural production statewide. After Roosevelt's death in 1945, nearby New Iberia became his final resting place and Morgansville took over as his official home until 1988 when he moved into a retirement home located within New Iberia limits
