Morgan City, Louisiana is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 7,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP includes most of the city of Morgan City and parts of Metairie and Bogalusa. It is named for General James A. Morgan who fought in the American Civil War and died there in 1874. According to the 2010 United States Census, 7,971 people lived in Morgan City; 5,856 inside the cordoned zone around New Orleans; and 375 individuals who did not reside within any coherent statistical area but were included due to their location within Jackson or Jefferson Parishes. As an unincorporated community it has no elected officials or public service providers that provide services such as water or seweration, trash collection or police protection - these functions are provided by nearby municipalities located adjacent to its borders which are responsible for those responsibilities respectively. As with other cities in Jefferson Parish, Morgan City's economy relies primarily on agriculture (grocery stores/stores providing items like gasoline and food), manufacturing (truck stop restaurant chain Jax Truck Stop being one example), government jobs (state correctional facilities located just outside town) and indirect business services related to transportation (the large truck stop provides fuel for local buses running from Metairie into Bogalusa). In addition to these primary sources of income, less common sources include retail sales (most notably a small store near downtown that sells books), rentals/flipping houses/condos and small businesses serving as retailers selling a variety of goods from home-based entrepreneurs.
