Morgan City is a small town in Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Livingston Parish. The first permanent settler in Morgan City was James Henniker, who arrived in 1811. He named his new community after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought against Native American forces at the Battle of New Orleans two years earlier. Henniker's original home and courthouse still stands today on Main Street near the present day corner of Third and Gourd Streets. The building was constructed between 1851 and 1852 by John Denton as one of three business buildings on what would become Morgan City's main street layout. The first post office opened in Morgan City on December 5, 1853 under the name "New Orleans". In 1865, it became "Lafayette". In 1870, Lafayette was renamed "Morgan City" after banker J.P. Morgan Jr., one of Livingston Parish's most influential residents during that time period. The city annexed parts of neighboring Lafourche Parish in 1903 and 1907 to form what is now Livingston Parish proper; however, voting within the city limits continued to be suspended until 1909 due to fears that annexation would lead to expensive infrastructure projects not being funded by local taxpayers while also increasing competition from other jurisdictions within Livingston Parish with similar populations (and tax rates) - an issue which would continue to influence Morgan City politics well into the 21st century

Morgan City is a city located in the parish of Orleans, La., in the north-central part of Louisiana. As of 2010, the population was 508. It is named for General James Morgan who fought in the American Revolution and prospered as a speculator and landowner. The city was platted in 1852 by John Sayers, a British-born lawyer and legislator from Louisiana who had settled near Baton Rouge. In 1857, when New Orleans was founded, Morgan City became an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of New Orleans. In 1862, during the American Civil War, General James "Pete" Beauregard made Morgan City his headquarters while he was besieging Baton Rouge. On April 9th 1865 after Confederate General Robert Ewell's army abandoned Baton Rouge precipitously following news that Union General Sherman had arrived at Alexandria with major reinforcements (by then Beauregard's last hope), Beauregard ordered his troops to burn all vestiges of what once were Morgan City’s plantations. The economic development of Morgan City has been one of its mainstay aspects over time; it has been home to several large businesses such as United States Steel Corporation (USSC) (the first steel company in Louisiana), ChevronTexaco Inc., Inter Oil Company Lubbock Texas Pipeline Company and Gulfstream Global Airlines parent company Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation since 1957. The city also contains many small businesses which have helped keep its economy afloat through difficult times such as eatery JT's Place which has been open since 1967 and First National Bank which has been open since 1907. Another key facet to this economy is maritime shipping; numerous companies including Sun Shipbuilding & Marine Corp., Matson Navigation Co., JR Marconi Incorporated, Great Lakes Shipping Ventures LLC operate out of or are based in Morgan City waterfront districts which have attracted both domestic and foreign shipping companies over the years due to its major waterways system connecting inland ports with gulf coasts around Mobile Bayou
Morgan City was founded in 1827 by Captain John Morgan. It was named for the General James Wilkinson, who helped fund the town's construction. The city grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to its location on a natural bayou and its access to shipping routes. By 1850, Morgan City had become one of the largest towns in Louisiana. The town experienced rapid growth until 1858, when a large fire destroyed most of the buildings in the town. Morgan City again experienced significant growth during Reconstruction in 1868-1870, thanks to increased trade and investment from nearby Mobile Bayou cities. However, economic decline began to set in after reconstruction ended and Morgan City declined further The population of Morgan City decreased dramatically following World War II due to various factors including loss of jobs due tothe war effort and changes in agricultural production. In 1990, it had dwindled to only about 150 people living within its borders
