Morgan City, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Jefferson in the Louisiana Purchase area of New Orleans. The population was 2,486 at the 2010 census. It is located on I-10 north of downtown New Orleans and east of Baton Rouge. The name Morgan City likely comes from the French "morgane" meaning "oak." Its first inhabitants may have been hunters who went to live near the oak trees in this area. He used this location as his Headquarters until he reached Baton Rouge late in 1818 while still en route to Mobile Bayou for an attack on Mexico. On July 29th 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down the courthouse and several other buildings around town during their attack on Fort Sumter in Baltimore County Maryland (now Baltimore). This event is generally considered to be when secession began in America In 1865, due to concerns about Union troops encircling Confederate territory near Memphis Tennessee that had not yet fallen victim to battle, Governor John Bel Edwards ordered Colonel Augustus Gwynn commanding Company A 1st Regiment Texas Volunteer Infantry to blockade that city Bruinsburg Kentucky leading up to Louisville KY However upon reaching Lexington KY Gwynn discovered that there were no Rebel soldiers guarding Lexington so he abandoned his plan and returned home . On November 8th 1865 General Robert E Lee's army marched into Lexington KY without fight resulting in 10 Killed Including Colonel Augustus Gwynn with most wounds received outside of Lexington KY Republican Congressman James Buchanan offered a $50000 reward for information leading to conviction or death for anyone responsible for burning down ColGwynn's house

The area that now Morgan City was first settled by Acadians in 1718 and was named for James Morgan, an Englishman who had come to Louisiana in 1763 as a surveyor for the French Crown. In 1802, the U.S. government established Fort George on Iberville Island in Lake Pontchartrain to guard against British aggression along the Mississippi River corridor. In 1803, President John Quincy Adams made Morgan City the seat of Jackson County after naming it for him and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Kemble Smith (1753-1828). In 1814, when Napoleon Bonaparte took control of France because of his victory at Waterloo, he ordered General Andrew Jackson to move southward from Tennessee and take possession of Mobile Bay so that Navy ships could not transport supplies to Europe through Mobile Strait. When Jackson reached Baton Rouge on May 5th he found that General Claiborne Price had evacuated it two days earlier with most of its inhabitants under cover of darkness before Price's army could arrive. Because no one knew whereJackson was or what he intended to do next, Price decided to hold onto Baton Rouge until reinforcements could arrive from Memphis or Vicksburg. When Napoleon heard about this move he ordered Count Fritsch von Lavaux to march towards Baton Rouge with 10 000 Germans and 5000 Swiss soldiers but instead Lavaux marched into Spanish territory instead and surrendered on July 8th without achieving anything other than public humiliation for Bonaparte which further damaged his reputation within France overall.. It wasn't until after Marshal Jean Baptiste Kléber arrived at La Porte d'Iberville with 1 500 cavalrymen on October 15th that Napoleon finally realized that he'd been foolish enough to leave Jackson unprotected and Kléber forced him back across the Red River near Prairie du Chienthusière before marching back upriver past Prairie du Chienthusière again on October 24th en route back downriver towards New Orleans Landing where he disembarked his troops just outside present day Morgan City Limits today Kléber then pressed forward all the way upriver past Prairie du Chienthusière once more before arriving at Iberville on November 2nd just east of present day town limits In 1815 Captain Abel Acheson reported having seen steamboats being built up river at Iberville which may have been what led Admiral David Dixon Porter (1795-1865) - Commander US Naval forces during cotton smuggling operations off the Gulf Coast during Reconstruction - To propose building a navy base adjacent to Iberville in order to intercept these boats while they still were happening .....Porter's idea quickly caughtOn December 12th 1815 Commodore James Buchanan sailed out from Alexandria Harbor with three warships - USS Constitution (27 guns), USS Perry (20 guns) and USS Preble (12 guns) under command of Lieutenant Commander John Rodgers - bound for Mobile Bay but never got there because early morning fog prevented them from sighting any vessels .....On January 6teenth 1696 Frenchman paynier de la Grotte discovered oil fields around Point Coupee.. By 1800 production began producing about 3000 barrels per day yielding $5 million per year ....In 1902 land east side Of current Main Street became part of town limits

Morgan City was founded in 1819 by John Morgan, a Scottish-born planter and man of wealth. The city became an important center of cotton trade and commerce during the antebellum period. It was also the site of several important Confederate military operations. In 1865, Morgan City was burned by Union troops during the Battle of Corinth.
