Morgan City, Louisiana is a small town located in the parish of Lafourche, west of New Orleans. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Morgan City–Bossier City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1835 by James W. Morgan and his brother John Morgan as a post office on a tract of land granted to them by President Andrew Jackson for their father's cattle ranch east of New Orleans. The name "Morgan City" was taken from James W. Morgan's older brother John who had been born there in 1792 and died young in 1848. The first Post Office building was built on what is now Main Street in 1850 and served until 1907 when it moved to its present location on University Avenue. In 1871, two brothers, Jethro and John Pugh managed to purchase 640 acres (256 hectares) within the limits of Lafourche Parish for $1 per acre ($24 per hectare). They named their new development "Morgan City" after James W. Morgan's older brother John who had died four years earlier while grazing his cattle thereabouts. After some resistances from some residents over this relatively high price tag which they saw as an excessive amount given the limited area available, they were able to build up their holdings over time through mergers and acquisitions with other local communities before finally declaring bankruptcy in 1893 following a period of economic depression that Hits hardest at those areas near downtown New Orleans during that time period known as the Great White Slump (1890-1910). The original town center was situated around Fourth Street between US 1 & LA 880 & Third Avenue where most business activities took place; including grocery stores, banks, churches, doctor’s offices etcetera until Katrina hit and all but destroyed these businesses leaving only one grocery store operational still open today as 'The Gumbo Shop'. That store sustained heavy damage during Hurricane Katrina but fortunately has been repaired/reconstructed and reopened as an antique mall called 'Tallahassee' since then! In fact almost every business still existing or operating within town limits prior to Katrina were either closed down or have completely disappeared due to lack of insurance reimbursement/damage dealt by Hurricane Katrina! A post office operated from 1903-1967 under various names including: Beaumont, Hammondsville, Moxieville & Natchitoches before it became known simply as "New Orleans". From 1967-2007 it also served as Appalachian Regional Commissary for La Grange County - serving both rural residents outside Of New Orleans suburbs combined with city dwellers inside Of McCarran International Airport boundaries! In spite being a small post office with only 6 Downtown employees total + 3 mail carriers(in 2007), USPS processed more than 113 MILLION pieces mail(pieces awaiting processing plus abandoned parcels) thru NEW ORLEANS MAIL STATION during that same period!!! Furthermore more than half(58%)of all package shipments received thru NEW ORLEANS MAIL STATION were delivered via USPS drone via Operation High Ease during THAT TIME Period!!!! Morgan City,LA is a small town in the parish of Morgan City in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Natchitoches River and has been inhabited by humans for about 12,000 years. The area now called Morgan City was first settled by Achewood people who were hunter-gatherers. They moved to this area from present day Baton Rouge around 1000 BC. From here they began trading with other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. By 1800 they had built their own village on a bend in the river near present day downtown Morgan City. In 1818, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered General James K. Polk to march on Mobile Bay to capture Fort Moselle which led to the Mexican–American War (1846-48). On May 14th, 1846 General Polk sent Major John Crouch with 700 men into what is now known as Downtown Morgan City with orders to burn down all buildings not necessary for military purposes within one hour or face punishment from him personally. At 3:00 PM that afternoon Mayor Charles Hays opened his storefront door expecting no trouble and found five soldiers outside watching him while he waited for his friends inside who then came out puffing smoke from their cigars! Afternoons were especially peaceful in those days so this type of behavior wasn’t tolerated by most people in today’s society but it did show that General Polk had good intentions when he marched into town! Mayor Hays met with Captain John Auld who commanded Company D of Infantry Regiment 5th Louisiana Volunteer Militia Armory Formation I within minutes after entering his storeroom; Captain Auld told Mayor Hays there would be no problem and offered to escort him home if he needed protection during these times of war – an offer which Mayor Hays accepted! In 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House & all civilian life ended abruptly followed by 4 days of martial law under Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest; however, since much property lay undefended across Union lines many local businesses continued operation including Mayor HAYS’S STORE until April 1865 when orders finally arrived ordering all businesses closed until further notice! The last resident died in 2006 making Morgan City LA's oldest continuously inhabited community! According to legend, three women originating from Tennessee coming overland passed through this area singing "I Shall Be Loved" on their way southbound before turning back north towards Mount Pleasant Missouri late one night about 1830 looking for fields where they could winter because their families couldn't farm due to lack of land east of Nashville - thus starting what we know as cotton planting operations westward throughout southeastern Missouri & Arkansas during this time period culminating in us producing more cotton than any other state combined during Reconstruction leading directly up until our current period circa 2000s as a result various UPNV shows being produced hereabouts touring various areas & museums featuring memorabilia related thereto) – eventually settling near Corinth IL about 1840 whence another wave of TN settlers crossed this same path eventually resulting our current location taking place just downstream along the banks adjacent both Rivers Oleander & Danica Boatman whereupon federal land ownership ensued ensuing development beginning herein including electricity generation commenced circa 1900 thru 2005 becoming Commercial Redevelopment Authority Land Subdivision No 2 Limited Partnership real estate interests comprising over 60% OWNED BY THE STATE OF LOUISIANA WITH ALL OTHER SHARES BEING TRANSFERRED TO NEW NAME IN 2011 INCLUDING MORGAN CITY LA LLC
Morgan City is located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and was founded by John Morgan in 1812. The town was named for General James Wilkinson who helped lead the American Revolution. In 1821, the town was incorporated and it became a center of cotton production. The city experienced some growth during World War II, when munitions plants were constructed in the area. Morgan City also experienced economic decline after the war, but has regained some prosperity over the past few decades.
