Morgan City is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Morgan City were Frenchmen who came from St. Martin in the parish of La Salle around 1785. They built a cabin on the east bank of the Assumption River and named it "Morgantown." In 1802, settlers from Illinois arrived and named their settlement "Edwardsville." A post office called Morgantown was established in 1818, but it was discontinued in 1821 because there were no mail deliveries to that location. In 1830, two German farmers named Weber moved into Morgan City and started a successful farm operation which continues to this day. They raised corn, wheat, beef cattle and horses. In 1840 they added tobacco to their farming enterprise and began processing cigars at their home site while still living on the farm. The Webers also manufactured wagons and furniture at their business until about 1860 when they turned their attention to fishing instead asspell tobacco had become an important commodity for exportation due to American demand for slaves during the era of slavery. A Presbyterian church built on State Street near Third Avenue in 1865 served as both a community center (for Bible reading Thursday night services), social hallways for small businesses operating out of downtown stores or warehouses during one stage or another of prosperity before Katrina impacted much later; then used as an overflow shelter/community center with limited facilities until closing its doors completely due to lack funding several years ago; currently being used as storage space by local government entities with limited access thereto since early 2015; finally serving as a donation-worthy structure openable only during daylight hours & closed Sundays
Morgan City is a small, independent city in Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. It is located on the north bank of the Mississippi River and is bordered by Lake Pontchartrain to the east, Hammond to the south-southwest, and Livingston to the north. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. The history of Morgan City spans over a hundred years. Its name stems from Maurice Fenton (1810- 1881), an early settler who arrived in 1837 with his family from England. In 1853, Fenton founded what would become known as Fentonville and developed it into a prosperous agricultural community with cotton plantations and a railroad station. In 1885, John Murrell incorporated Morgan City as an independently managed town under the name of Canal Pointe. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction due to its location on navigable waterwayside land that allowed for shipment of goods and goodsmen transporting manufactured items downriver to be unloaded at port cities such as New Orleans or Mobile Bayou for onward delivery. By 1900, Canal Pointe had 2 churches, 14 stores and 50 homes; it also boasted an electric light plant and two telephone lines. During World War II, General Motors Corporation built a large factory in Morgan City which supplied parts for military vehicles across northern Africa and Europe. When production ceased in 1945, many of GM's employees relocated to nearby Carpentersville or other postwar communities in Louisiana before returning to their original hometowns after World War II. Today's economy relies heavily on tourism - including conventions and trade shows - although some businesses have closed since Hurricane Katrina made landfall in 2005
