Morgan City is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 8,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. The name "Morgan City" was given to the community by General James Wilkinson who led an American force into Mexico in 1846 as part of the Mexican-American War. Since its founding in 1836, Morgan City has been a center for cotton and cattle farming. Cotton crops continue to be important; however, other economic sectors have developed such as manufacturing and light industrial development around Interstate 10 (I-10) and Port Arthur Boulevard. The downtown shopping district contains several large stores including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, etc., and several smaller businesses clustered around First National Bank and Memorial Drive. The Historic District of Morgan City is bounded on the east by I-10 exit 5A; on the south by US Highway 190; on the west by Canal Street; on the north by Veterans Administration Hospital property. It includes over 100 contributing buildings from various periods from before 1836 until after Hurricane Katrina destroyed many historic structures in 2005. Many of these buildings are now used for housing or office space with only a few remaining for exhibition or public use because of their vulnerability to damage during natural disasters or storms like Katrina. The first post office opened in 1836 under the name "Cottonmouth". In 1840 it changed its name to "Morgan City". On December 19th 1860 a fire destroyed most of downtown Morgan City but did not cause any serious damage to either homes or commercial structure aside from some minor smoke exposure which could be seen coming out from many storefronts across town due to dry conditions caused by lack of rain fall that year especially unusual considering New Orleans had just experienced its worst major hurricane ever that season according to then mayor Mitch Landrieu who said "the destruction wrought within our limits must needs follow such greatstrengthening protection"). The city re-opened on January 6th 1861 with new Checkered flag flags flying from many courthouse/town hall buildings along Third Street between Canal and St Peters Streets . By 1865 almost all businesses had reopened except for one store still closed down about two miles away near where I-10 exits 4 & 7 currently stand today due to flooding that same year which impacted both Morgan City & adjacent areas

Morgan City is located in the parish of Vernon, Louisiana, about twenty miles northeast of New Orleans. It was founded by General Johnplugins Morgan and his brother-in-law NicholasBossier in 1814 as a small trading post on the Red River. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, becoming an important commercial center and staging ground for slave trade. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from New Orleans to Morgan City after their victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Battle of New Orleans. The town was renamed for General Jackson in 1840. The cotton industry played a major role in the growth of Morgan City. Cotton plantations were established here beginning in the 1830s and continued to be significant economic assets until around the turn of the century. By 1860, however, most of the cotton fields had been abandoned and Morgan City began to decline as a result. However, its importance as a cultural and educational center has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history. Today, Morgan City is populated primarily by descendants of slaves who lived here during both antebellum and modern times. Although some aspects of its historical context have changed since then (e.g., many businesses are no longer operated within walking distance of downtown), it remains one of the largest black communities in Louisiana and one of its most culturally vibrant cities.
Morgan City was founded by Captain John Morgan in 1814. The town grew rapidly due to the increased trade with the Gulf of Mexico and other parts of the United States. In 1836, Captain Morgan's forces were defeated at the Battle of New Orleans and Morgan was forced to flee to Mobile, Alabama. Morgan's townsite was burned down in 1864 but new settlements began to form around the site. In 1907, Morgan City became a city under Louisiana law.
