Today it remains an important part of the community and its walls can be seen throughout downtown Morgan City. The town developed around two churches: First Baptist Church, which opened in 1871; and Second Baptist Church which opened in 1907. The original churches were replaced by new ones during the 1990s when construction began on a new downtown mall that will eventually include both churches as well as other cultural attractions such as theatres and restaurants.
