Monroe, Louisiana is a small town in the parish of Orleans in the east-central part of the state of Louisiana. The population was 1,553 at the 2010 census. Monroe is located on flood plain along the Mississippi River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Baton Rouge and 100 miles (160 km) northwest of New Orleans. The first Europeans to visit what is now Monroe were French traders who traveled upriver in 1692–93. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto named it La Nueva Orleans in 1539 while exploring what are now Arkansas and Texas. The area that would become Monroe was settled by planters from South Carolina in 1807 after General Andrew Jackson's Expedition burned much of Mobile Bay to clear land for cotton plantations. The town was founded as a military post on Decatur Island near present day Baton Rouge. In 1814, James K. Polk moved his troops into present day Monroe after they were routed by Creek Indians at Sadique Creek Bridge over Chickasaw Nation territory during the Battle of Horseshoe Bend。 After General Jean Baptiste Laclair's victory over Tecumseh at Assumption Parish Line on July 4, 1815, Monroeville became capital of East Louisiana under Governor Lavaca’s order and also served as seat for East Louisiana County until 1785 when it became part of West Louisiana Territory under President James Kenedy’s orders.. In 1861, following Union victories at Antietam and Gettysburg, Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House providing an opportunity for President Lincoln to pardon all Unionists including those in Monroe County who had fought against him throughout the war. By 1865, however, most residents had already left for other parts of Louisiana or Alabama due to Reconstruction policies which favored African Americans over whites and lack thereof opportunities within newly created local governments... After Reconstruction ended in 1880 with passage of federal law known as The Fourteenth Amendment which guaranteed voting rights to black Americans regardless of race or birth certificate status., many white people returned to live among blacks but some also continued to reside in Monroe until well into the 21st century... Monroe experienced significant growth during World War II when its population reached 3,000 after government restrictions were lifted allowing citizens more access to education and work opportunities....In 1951 gasoline rationing began which lasted through 1957....With limited development prospects following Eisenhower's presidency culminating with two terms as president containing no major domestic initiatives,...the community experienced rapid growth beginning with incorporation as a town on November 1st 1953….the foundation stone being laid for Stroudsburg Drive School System becoming operational 5 years later….. subsequent expansion adding new buildings resulting in current total enrollment exceeding 3200....... real estate values have increased significantly reflecting high demand from businesses looking for accessible location within easy commute distance from both Baton Rouge & New Orleans

In 1836, Monroe became the capital of Louisiana. During Reconstruction Era in America following theCivil War, Monroe played an important role in helping to rebuild southern America. In 1898, United States acquired Spanish-controlled territory in Cuba which included Monroe. After years of negotiations, Spain ceded Puerto Rico back to the US in 1917; however, Monroe retained jurisdiction over Lane County (now Dallas) until it was annexed by Dallas in 1920. The city is home to many famous people including former President George W Bush who was born and raised here and singer Whitney Houston who was born nearbyin 1957. The town also has several movie sets and popular tourist destinations such as Cane Ridge Park where Whitney Houston performed her last concert before her death from ovarian cancer four years later
Monroe was born on July 12, 1807 in Louisiana. On December 12, 1835, the US Congress passed a bill establishing the Mississippi Territory. Monroe became the first county seat of the new territory. The Territorial Legislature created a board to manage the county and named Monroe its first mayor.
