In 1830, Monroe's first school opened with twelve students and two teachers; it operated until Reconstruction times when it was closed due to lack of funding. The town experienced a resurgence beginning in the late 1800s thanks to its location on I-10 near Baton Rouge and other major metropolitan areas; however, economic decline took hold by the early 21st century due to various factors including rapids on both sides of Route 10 and competition from larger towns such as Lafayette and Alexandria acrossriver. Today, Monroe remains an agricultural center with significant cattle production and tourism providing jobs for many residents; it also hosts annual agricultural fairs that are one of the most important tourist attractions in Rapides Parish
