Monroe, Louisiana is the home of the world's first firearm-based amusement park. The park was opened in 1892 by businessman John D. Rockefeller and his family. It was later purchased by entrepreneur Maurice Hinton and renamed the Maurice Hinton Amusement Park. The park closed in 1976 but was reopened in 1984 as a gun show/ exhibition center known as the Worlds Fair Gun Show & Expo, which remains its current name today. The fairgrounds were also used for other events such as jazz concerts and horse races until they were sold to developer Forrest Fields in 1990.
Monroe is a small town in the parish of Orleans in Louisiana. The population was 3,858 at the 2010 census. The name Monroe comes from two French words: "mont" meaning hill and "oneer" meaning house or settlement. The first settler in what is now Monroe was Jean Baptiste Monnier who arrived on July 14, 1762. He named his new land Monterey after his hometown of Mexico City. Another early settler, Pierre L’Ouverture, established a trading post here on October 7, 1804. This site later housed the presidio (Fort Worth) National Historic Site which was designated a National Monument in 1934. In 1836, Jackson County was created from parts of Orleans Parish and Monroe became one of its several townships. The influx of white settlers led to increased development here including the founding of a academy in 1840 by Rev. John Donelson with ties to LSU (Lafayette University). It wasn’t until 1863 that Monroe had its own courthouse and school system when Congress passed an act providing for this type of facility statewide. In 1865, President Johnson awarded Monroe the honorific title “City of New Orleans” which it retains to this day! During World War II, many businesses were closed due to rationing but many residents still contributed their time and resources towards helping war efforts through various organizations such as American Red Cross chapters and United Defense Forces units stationed throughout the area. One local resident even made it onto Mount Suribachi where he helped lead a strategic firefight against Japanese forces during Operation Downfall on December 10th 1945! Monroe was founded on August 14, 1718 by the French and Indian forces under General Marquis de Lafayette. The town was named for John Monro, an American general who had fought in the French and Indian War.
