Monroe is a small town in the eastern portion of Louisiana, United States. The population was 5,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orleans Parish parish. The village was named for John Monroe, a French trader who had settled there in 1795. In 1814, when Robert E. Lee's army invaded Orleans Parish and burned much of the town to the ground, Monroe's citizens quickly rebuilt it with logs from their local mills. The settlement grew rapidly during Reconstruction Period (1868-1877), thanks to its strategic location on high ground between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and its easy access to transportation including an rail line and two rivers. During World War II, many Monroe residents served in the U.S military or were drafted into military service; as a result, many businesses were closed or converted into barracks or other war-related uses. However, by 1945 most of the civilian population had returned to their homes and businesses resumed normal operations. In recent years, Monroe has seen modest growth due to its proximity to larger cities such as Baton Rouge and New Orleans; however, it remains one of Louisiana's poorest communities ranking even lower than Metairie at 73rd out of 100 counties in terms of median household income according to 2016 Census data released by HUD/Census Bureau . In World War II, much effort went into creating an airfield at nearby Shreveport so that Allied pilots could bomb Japanese positions in Louisiana and Texas. After the war, construction began on a major shopping center named after President Harry Truman which opened in 1951. The community experienced rapid growth during its early years due to new housing developments and other development projects completed throughout Monroe throughout the 1960s and 1970s

Monroe was founded in 1712 by Frenchmen and named for General Marquis de Lafayette. The town grew rapidly due to the area's natural resources, which included timber, minerals, and water supplies. By 1871, Monroe had a population of over 100,000 people and was one of the most important industrial cities in Louisiana. The city was renamed New Orleans in 1958 after the departure of its original namesake.
