On July 4th, 1907 an earthquake struck Monrovia followed by a magnitude 5.6 local epicenter just east of town near Lake Pontchartrain which killed more than 100 people and injured over 400 others including some who were trapped under collapsed homes following the quake’s epicentre within minutes afterwards according to reports eyewitnesses had seen such widespread destruction across much of southern Louisiana with very few survivors even emerging from those flattened areas alive- leaving behind Churches Malls schools Light Railroads Streets Businesses all destroyedomitting only foundations remaining standing evidence could be found throughout most rural areas damage amounts vary greatly with majority structures damaged or destroyed totally or partially rebuild immediately began but due mostly to lack funds availability ceased many months later finally completed less than 12 months after initial impact making it one of deadliest natural disasters ever recorded in America during that time period

The first post office in Monroe was established on December 7, 1849, and was named for Earl Monroe, then United States Secretary of State. The current Post Office building was built in 1907-1908 and is one of the few original commercial buildings in Monroe still standing from its early days as a small town. In 1860, Henry Clay Frick founded what would become American Crystal Lime Works in Monroe and continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1971. The only other large company located within walking distance of downtown Monroe during this time were two oil refineries: UPI Oil Refinery which opened around 1909 and Holland Petroleum Refinery which opened around 1927. These refineries produced muchneeded fuel for New Orleans during the Great Depression years but also caused significant environmental damage as their emissions contaminated nearby waterways with heavy metals that remain hazardous to today's aquatic life and humans today even after many years since they stopped operations
