Minden is a small town located in south Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Minden is part of the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Minden's downtown has been home to the local bank and several other businesses since 1881. It was also the site of one of only two daily newspapers in south Louisiana when it ceased publication in 1959. Today, Minden's Main Street contains a few cafés and restaurants as well as a post office and some small stores. There are also two churches located in Minden: First Baptist Church (founded 1915) and Christ Episcopal Church (founded 1895). The first mention of Minden comes from Jean-Baptiste de la Salle who noted that "In this place there are some strong people". In 1775, Lt.-Colonel James Wilkinson named it after his grandfather, John Wilkinson, who had settled near Mobile Bayou during the French & Indian War. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on a major shipping route connecting New Orleans with Baton Rouge and older parts of South Louisiana. In 1881, an act was passed by the state legislature which established a school district for Minden; this made Minden one of the first townships in south Louisiana to be organized under state law. The original building on Main Street still stands today - it served as both the original courthouse for southern Lafourche Parish and as headquarters for various local governments until 1958 when it became property of the LSU Department of Agricultural Sciences campus before being sold to neighboring parish government officials in 1961. It wasn't until 1934 that another building replaced what had been known as Courthouse Square; this new structure included a jail which opened on December 5th that year along with 24 other buildings used by county government including court houses, sheriff's offices, polling places etc.. One notable event which occurred at Courthouse Square during this time period was on October 12th 1916 when Ulysses S Grant travelled into Lafourche Parish accompanied by then Governor Read Bullock for a public meeting regarding Reconstruction plans underway within Mississippi following their unsuccessful attempt at taking Vicksburg Alabama earlier that year. After giving speeches about southern Reconstruction efforts he then toured different plantations throughout Lafourche Parish before returning to town where he enjoyed dinner at First Baptist Church before leaving for his home plantation later that night.. During World War II both Courthouse Square and Jail were used extensively by military authorities including housing troops barracks while also serving as an airfield providing necessary landing/landing rights offshore while also hosting weapons tests; these operations took place adjacent to present day Boulevard Park Drive across from Lake Pontchartrain University Campus). As recently as 1978 all but three buildings on Courthouse Square were destroyed by fire resulting from overloading steamboats moored outside during high water season; howeverdue diligence exercised by current parish officials most such structures have since been restored or replaced with more recent construction)). mindensociety@gmail dot com

Today, Minden is known for its arts scene which includes several visual arts galleries, various music venues and an annual literary festival that draws attention to local authors. Minden was founded in 1828 by Captain John Meagher as a small community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first residents of Minden were Irish Catholic immigrants, who built homes and a church in what is now the downtown area. By 1840, Minden had a population of 25 people. In 1851, Minden became a town when it was granted city status by the Louisiana Legislature. The town's first mayor was James Hickey. In 1865, Minden became an incorporated village when it passed an ordinance establishing municipal government. The first Mayor was George Moffett. In 1901, Minden experienced its worst drought in over 100 years, which led to food shortages and profiteering among businesses in the town. This caused significant unrest in the town and eventually led to its secession from Orleans Parish as a separate municipality known as "Minden-Orleans." The new municipality official name was "Minden-Macon" until 1907 when it reverted back to "Minden." In 1923, Minden joined with Lafourche Parish (then located east of New Orleans) to form Lake Pontchartrain Authority which ruled much of southern Louisiana until 1937 when it merged into New Orleans Regional Planning Commission In January 2005 Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and primarily struck areas near Bayou St. Bernard; however, much damage occurred throughout Minden including many homes that still stand today without insurance or reconstruction assistance due to lack of knowledge about what could be done to them after such a powerful storm surge
