In the early 1900s, Minden was a small town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. It was named for General John A. Minden, who led Confederate troops during the American Civil War. The town's population peaked at around 1,500 in the 1930s and 1940s, but has since decreased significantly. Minden is located on the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The river forms part of the border between Louisiana and Texas. In 1836, Commodore James Farragut landed his fleet at Minden to survey an area for a possible Indian removal campaign. After his expedition returned to America with nothing found worthy of exploration in that area, he decided to move the entire tribe eastward into what is now Arkansas Territory. During World War II, Minden was one of several small towns along the Mississippi River bled dry by patriotic Americans fighting for their country against Nazi Germany. Because of this activity and lack of water resources in Rapides Parish during wartime, most residents moved away from Minden after hostilities ended in 1945. Today only a few remains from those times remain - arections to churches that once stood tall along Church Street near present-day Lake Pontchartrain Boulevard; a historic home on Third Street overlooking downtown; as well as old Glenn Miller recording studio equipment still stored inside its original building on West Main Street (now known as the Old Glenn Miller Museum). Minden is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge–Metairie–New Orleans metropolitan area. Minden is known for its wineries and vineyards and for its annual Minden Jazz Festival which attracts large crowds of music lovers from all over the world. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Minden were Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1796. The town was founded on a plantation by General Nicholas Hennepin and his wife Elizabeth (née Wagoner) on November 15, 1802. They named it after their de facto home state of Tennessee, where they had been born and raised. The Hennepin family operated a cotton plantation until 1830 when they sold it to Jossiah Willingfit Jr., an entrepreneur who established a gristmill and sawmill hereabouts in 1831. In 1834, two brothers named Aulds built a log cabin on present-day East Market Street just north of the present-day line of Lake Pontchartrain Boulevard/Hwy 190/I-10 exit 417B near what are today Foster's Corners Road and Westlake Drive; this became Aulds' Ferry Landing later that year when Captain John Aulds leased land from Samuel Proctor for boat transportation to New Orleans from his ferry landing near Belle Chasse Bayou on the Hudswell Bayou east of downtown Minden. In 1840, Captain John Aulds left his ferry landing behind him when he acquired additional property along Westlake Drive extending into Lake Pontchartrain across from City Hall (later renamed Parkettes Avenue). He took up residence there with his slaves until his death in 1865; before that date he has been listed as "John Aulds Landing" on numerous maps dating back to 1840 through 1860 inclusive.) On October 8th 1861 local resident James Kapp donated land situated betweenpresent day I-10 exit 417B westbound lanes Exit 421A eastbound lanes & State Highway 6 southbound lanes about two miles SW of current Day East Market Street just north of downtown Minden to become Racine Cemetery & remain so ever since (& still does); this became one side or edge or fringe or boundary or extremity or corner or extremity or side street off I-10 exit 417B then known as Racine Avenue & currently known as "Kapp's Corner" It should be noted that while much has changed within Minden itself during the last few hundred years - including most notably its annexation by Baton Rouge in 2002 - many aspects (e.g., ZIP codes) remain remarkably similar throughout that time period! The Hudson River Machine Works (HRW) was founded in 1851 by two engineers, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Louis Sullivan. It was one of several machine shops that developed along proto-industrial lines during this time period across many different regions in America. RW also played an important role in developing turbines for electric railways during this time period
Minden was founded in 1821 by Frenchmen, who named it after the small town of Menen on the Mississippi River. The area that now makes up Minden had been under Spanish occupation for many years, and the French were not content with this situation. In 1821, they decided to move their settlement to what is now Minden, Louisiana. They named their new town after Menen because of the similarity of its architecture and scenery to that town on the river. The first store in Minden was built by Pierre-André Demarcq and his brother-in-law, Gaspard Lachambre. A post office was established at Minden in 1826. In 1830, a school was constructed at Minden and opened to teach children English and arithmetic. By 1840, there were twentythree stores in Minden with a population of about 150 people. By 1860, numbers had increased to over 360 people with a population of 2200 people. In 1861, Confederate forces attacked Union forces near Minden and many residents fled the battle. Many men died or were injured during the battle; some 200 men total were listed as dead or missing according to local reports at the time. Aftermaths included terrible poverty which made life difficult for both Unionists and Confederates alike; however these events did not start Minden's decline but rather helped it grow stronger as a community center due to its location on an important trade route between Baton Rouge and New Orleans
