Minden, Louisiana is a small town located in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. Minden was founded in 1811 by French settlers and became a principal center of cotton production in the area. The Minden Cotton Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The Minden post office operated from 1810 to 1830. In 1831, A.J. Mattox established an academy there which would become one of the leading schools in Lafourche Parish. In 1915, General Motors built a plant here that produced cars and other automobiles until it closed in 1984. The Minden Air Force Base opened here in 1951 and served as a base for military operations during the Vietnam War and later during Operation Desert Storm. The town's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding; however, some development has occurred such as a hospital and library complex completed in 2003 and apartment complexes completed since 2007.
