Minden was a small town in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2000 census. Minden is located on the east side of Minden Bayou. It is adjacent to New Iberia and Lake Providence. The town was founded by John Light and his family in 1827. He named it for his birthplace, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1871, the first post office in Minden opened with a population of six people. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the bayou and its connections to both New Iberia and neighboring plantations. In 1906, Minden had a population of 2,500 people; by 1920 it had grown to 10,000 people. The cotton industry became dominant in Minden during this time and many homes were built for workers at various mills within walking distance of each other. By World War II,Minden's population had reached 30,000 people; however, due to the war effort and increased prices for cotton products overall, the town's economy crashed after 1945. Today there are only a few remaining residents left in Minden who live near their former businesses or attend local churches services.
