It is part of the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. The town was founded by French colonists in 1814 as Fort St. John de la Ville and changed its name to Minden in 1835 after General Andrew Jackson's victory at the Battle of Minden (1836). The town was named for James K. Polk, then US President-elect and brother of former Vice President James K. Polk. In 1886, it became part of the parish that included Baton Rouge and developed into one of the most important cotton textile mills in Louisiana during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The mill closed in 1979 and retains only a faint memory among local residents today; however, according to oral history compiled by local historian John Nixon for his book "A History of Minden", fire destroyed much of the mill property in 1937 which led to its abandonment but also helped make possible some significant economic development over time including a new elementary school which opened in 1984 and continues to serve as a community center today. The land where Minden now stands was first owned by Nicholas Boudreaux who built two plantations along with other outposts called Planter's Bayou Plantation near present-day Slidell before he sold them all to Captain Pierre Beauregard for $1 million on October 6, 1763 - just days after King George III crowned him Emperor of France following his successful march from Toulouse through southwestern France overland across Spanish territory towards Madrid under cover of nightfall on September 15/16 -thus becoming one of America's first overseas colonies! "In this day we set our eyes upon lands new never seen before: A tract lying athwart us on both banks Of THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER Which lay flat open unto us like an immense Sea... Minden was founded on December 12, 1805 by Nicholas Minden and his wife Anna. It became a Parish in 1865. The town sprang up around the foundry of J.B. Hennessey & Sons which produced cannon for the Confederate War effort. After the war, Minden prospered as a small community with its own school, churches and businesses until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
