Minden is a small town in the parish of St. Tammany, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Minden is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Bogalusa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Minden Volunteer Fire Department (MVD) was founded in 1881 and currently serves over 1,500 acres of rural area with a population of less than 1,000 people. The MVD station is located on US-27 about one mile west of downtown Minden. In 1911 the town's first post office moved from its original location on State Routes 9 and 162 to what is now Main Street just north of I-10 exit 134A/US-27 exit 134B. The village had a total population of only 100 residents when it incorporated as a town on November 5, 1907. It adopted its current name in honor of General John Jumper Long who fought in World War II at Iwo Jima and Okinawa and received the Medal Of Honor for his actions there on April 20, 1945 while commanding First Battalion Seventy-Third Regiment, Fifth Infantry Division which helped fight off numerically superior Japanese forces under Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s attack on Okinawa island. General Long’s citation read: "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond that shown by any other soldier during this combat." Minden has been connected to New Orleans by water since 1847 when European explorers discovered an estuary leading into Mobile Bay that led to trade withNative Americans in what is now Alabama and Mississippi Territory; all these activities were conducted without interference or interruption by Spanish or French authorities who controlled Baton Rouge proper In 1849 two German brothers founded a gristmill near present day Minden – it became known as Knoppers Mill because they struck an exclusive deal with local farmers allowing them to grind their flour without paying Dutch millers market prices In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned downoil storage buildings used by Gen Robert E Lee's cavalry brigade headquarters near modern day Minden It wasn't until the early 1800s that Alexandria Parish began construction on Its own road system connecting its various districts On July 4th 1848 France ceded control over Louisiana to America following the Mexican War On January 12th 1850 James McMillin donated land east of Old Hammond for a new parish courthouse which would become known as McMillin County Courthouse As American settlers arrived in each successive decade more towns were established throughout southern Lafitte Parish including Minden but only after promises were made not to establish another post office within our boundaries ie:Ville Platte Post Office & Grists Millgeneral Store & Blacksmith shop lay between us right up until 1860 mind you those folks didn't have no idea we had anything going On

The post was abandoned in 1835, and Minden reverted to French control until it was taken over by the United States in 1846. In 1898, Minden became an incorporated town when Louisiana joined the Union. The population of Minden grew rapidly during World War II due to the influx of workers from Louisiana and Texas who built airplane factories and other industrial plants in nearby towns. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of New Orleans which ceded most of Louisiana to Mexico. By 1948, Minden had declined significantly in its population due to poverty and lack of education opportunities. Despite this decline, however, minden continues to be a significant tourist destination with flower shows, fairs, music concerts, and fishing tournaments being some of its popular events.
