Minden was the capital of Claiborne Parish from 1848 to 1887. The site of Minden had been a French post in the early 1800s, and in 1802, the parish was organized as Claiborne Parish. In 1808, Minden became the county seat of Claiborne County. A courthouse and jail were built there in 1836. The town was platted in1849 by J.M. Cochran and Wm. Hennessey, two settlers from Mobile, Alabama who had come downriver on the Mississippi River to find new land for themselves and their families. In 1901, Minden became a city when it was annexed by New Orleans after its incorporation as a city under Louisiana law that year. It remained an independent municipality until it merged with New Orleans on January 1, 1969 to form one large city with a population of over 500,000 people across nine municipalities which included Minden proper (the original City), Jefferson Park (a part of New Orleans), Central Business District (Acreage I), Gentilly (a part of New Orleans), Garden District (part of New Orleans), Lafitte Heights (a part of Lafayette Parish) and Chalmette (a part of St Tammany Parish). Minden is located at 29°29′N -91°11′W on the banks of the Mississippi River about 28 miles north-northwest of Baton Rouge and 43 miles south-southwest of New Orleans. The river forms most Of Minden's border; east is drained by Monroe Lake while westward flows Old Bayou Road which joins Interstate 10 just east thereof before entering Lafitte Island National Wildlife Refuge near Grand Isle Island where US Highway 90 ends abruptly at US Highway 61 about midway between Minden and Lafayette parishes The earliest permanent habitation hereabouts may be found among the Choctaws living upon Utica Hill within present day Claiborne Parish date back some fifteen hundred years or so Thereafter Fort Natchitoches was established at this location during or soon after General Andrew Jackson's Creek Campaign against Mexico led directly by his friend/coadjutorGeneral Santa Anna circa November 8th Upon successfull reduction & capture said fortifications & stronghold thereby putting an end thereto& subsequently Escobar Ferry Bridge being constructed || By order dated October 14th Abril 2nd 1794 || By virtue hereof I direct Major James Wilkinson commanding U S Artillery detachment under Capt John Sevier To proceed immediately to Fort Natchitoches thence via Escobar Ferry Bridge Orchard Bluff thence pursuant roadstead northwesterly to Red Cedar Shoals then due southwesterly along former Red Cedar Shoals beachfront vicinity aforesaid making such route as circumstances may require It should be noted that little if any evidence exists verifying these claims beyond archaeological remains thus far unearthed although it would make for interesting research nonetheless Paleoindian tool manufacture has also been inferred from lithics excavated offshore near Bolingbrook Landing within present day Napoleonville adjacent Galveston Bayou drainage area dating back possibly 12500 BC some two thousand feet deep . So too does ancient pottery bearing Garcia Marks markings consistent with Aztec type design including geometric designs similar those now found throughout Central America outside Mexico City dating back some 4500 BC along with tools fashioned out cf lowlands Sangre de Cristo Canyon region well over 4000 years old These finds support recent assertions made documentary evidence gleaned from interviews with long time Carthaginian Blood relative Agustín Garcia whose family have possession & control Over all property herein mentioned creek mouth boundaries nearest community Hambrickport situated 5 miles due east on main channel
Minden was founded in 1826 by John Wilkinson and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for General Minden, who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in Minden in 1829. In 1860, the town had a population of just over 100 people. By 1880, Minden had a population of 2,500 people and it became the largest settlement in northern Louisiana. The town became an important transportation center due to its location on the Atchafalaya River. In 1889, Minden passed through a process that allowed residents to vote on whether they wanted to become a city. On December 12th of that year,Minden voted to become a city and it began to grow rapidly. By 1912, Minden had a population of 10,000 people and it had become one of the most populous cities in Louisiana. In 1970, Minden lost its status as an independent city and it became part of Jefferson Parish.
