Minden, Louisiana is a small town in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. Minden is located on the New Orleans-Metairie Fault east of Baton Rouge and west of Shreveport. The Minden post office has been in operation since 1881. Minden's first settler was Alexander Wigglesworth. A log cabin was erected near Minden in 1799 by Wigglesworth and his brother John. The first store in Minden was built on the corner of Third Street and Maple Avenue in 1802 by John Kippersley. In 1822, Jno Hocking established a blacksmith shop at 5th & Main Streets which became known as Hocking's forge. In 1830, Isaac Haas set up a tannery on the south side of I-10 outside Minden where he operated until his death in 1862. His son Jacob Haas continued operations until 1865 when he sold it to James Fenton who renamed it Fenton's tannery, continuing to operate it until 1902 when it burned down due to an accidental fire that destroyed most of the tannery buildings including the engine house and smithy/forge Building now known as the Old Dutch Reformed Church located off US 41A just east of US 11 exit 221 (Thalia Road). In 1876, Leland Stanford bought title to 640 acres along I-10 from James Fenton for $4,000 cash with understanding that he would maintain open access to said land for hunting and farming purposes only without development or disturbance for 50 years providing annual payments totaling $2,500 which were collected from leasehold tenants then running wild over time into today’s values(NOTE: property had been surveyed by Surveyor General William Moultrie prior to sale)). Mr. Stanford immediately began construction upon receipt of title allowing him complete privacy within what would become Palo Alto Cemetery with its privately owned gates still standing today! On December 15th 1886 “Leland Stanford Jr., California Governor” signified formal completion with groundbreaking taking place one week later following heavy rainstorms that resulted in flooding across much needed macadam street repairs) finally becoming a part of Palo Alto Township – one day after over 100 years!
