Mandeville is a town in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 2,989 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Dutch Settlers in 1812. The first post office in Mandeville was established in 1816. The name of the town reflects Englishman General and statesman Sir Robert Peel's belief that "a good place for a gentleman to live is any place where he can get along with other gentlemen." The first permanent settler in Mandeville was John Crouse, who arrived there on July 10, 1812. He and his family built a cabin near what is now the intersection of FM 1710 and LA 613 (now US 90). Other early settlers included Nicholas Chilton and Nathaniel Hennigan. In 1836, David Sibley came to Mandeville from New Orleans with his family and began clearing land for plantations in present-day Rapides Parish. In 1840, Sibley donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land to the parish government for use as a school campus; it became the current site of Rapides High School today. David Sibley also donated $1 million to help finance the construction of two new Parishes Courthouse buildings – one on Chartres Street in downtown Mandeville and one on Main Street east of downtown – which were completed in 1886 and 1912 respectively. The cotton gin industry reached its peak around 1830 but soon fell victim to technology improvements such as adulterated cottonseed oil production that made textiles more affordable for consumers overall whilealso increasing competition from cheaper baleen weaving mills located east of Baton Rouge . By 1900 however, cotton production had resumed somewhat thanks to innovations such as chemical fertilization techniques developed by Dwight Morrow during World War II . Mandeville experienced significant growth following World War II due largely to military veterans returning home with new skills or interests which helped revive heavy manufacturing sectors like aircraft manufacturing or shipbuilding . After Katrina hit landfall on August 29th 2005 - causing widespread devastation throughout Louisiana - many small businesses failed or closed their doors because they could not compete against larger companies who benefited from available taxpayer resources like FEMA loans or state subsidies .
