The town originally consisted of a single storehouse and four families lived there until 1868 when it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 6,612. The original courthouse was destroyed by a fire in 1894 but replaced by the current building two years later. In 1941, Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to the town center with most stores and residences destroyed or damaged beyond repair. The history of Mandeville, Louisiana began with the arrival of French colonists in 1763. The area that is now Mandeville was first settled by the Muscogee people, who were from Georgia. In 1804, a group of Americans arrived in what is now Mandeville and founded a town named for General Andrew Jackson. The Americans built a school and trading post here, which became known as Jackson Station. When the American Civil War ended in 1865, most of what is now Mandeville was annexed to the United States.
