On February 9th, 1830, President Andrew Johnson signed a proclamation ordering all Indian nations west of Mexico City to remove any artillery they had located within five miles of US soil or face federal action. This order caused many Native Americans in this area to arm themselves and begin fighting against American forces. When Texas became an independent State in 1865, it retained its slave trade laws which resulted in African Americans being transported into Louisiana for their labor; some were sold into slavery while others were forced into servitude throughClaude Moncrief's Custom House Raids between 1885-1887 which left over 100 blacks dead. In 1949, the Houma Civic Association organized a series of civic walks throughout the city beginning with one held at local high school; subsequent walks were held throughout downtown Houma as well as at various locations around town including Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St Augustine Parish School). After several years of planning and fundraising by members ofthe civic association ( led by Mayor Harold French), HOUSING FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITYBEGAN TO BE BUILT ON WESTERN STREET IN MANDEVILLEOn May 6th 1954 when Dr Solomon Haygood purchased Lot 3 & 4 North Street West from Mrs Fannie Brown for $3500 . Dr Haygood soon realized that he could not build a housing project without more space so he proceeded to purchase Lots 5 & 6 South Street East from Mrs Gertrude Beaubien for $4000 . He then proceedeto erect upon these properties two frame houses which are currently on North Street West opposite Mr Harry Selvin's house (which we refer to as “The Haygood House” ).Dr Haygood quickly became successful in business so much so that he decidedto open a restaurant called "The Cafe" on Main Street serving breakfast until 2pm Monday thru Thursday and 7pm Friday thru Sunday.(Today we would refer to this restaurant as "Bella Vita").After graduating college in 1965 DrLouisiana Tech PhD candidateIn 1975Dr John Lanyon joined him at Louisiana Tech University where they foundedLanyon Research Associates Inc.(LRAI)Dr Lanyon remained with LRAI until his death on January 26th 2006 Chairman Emeritus since March 2006

He named this new land Monroe County after President James K. Polk’s brother-in-law John Quincy Adams (1804-1865). Mandeville experienced another period of growth and prosperity in the late 19th century when railroads arrived to bring goods south from Chicago and Liverpool across the Gulf Coast region to Mandeville’s harborfront businesses such as cotton ginning plants (the first machine cotton gin ever built), flour mills, meatpacking plants and lumberyards before reaching Mobile Bayou for export downriver to points eastward including TampaBay., Jacksonville Beach,, PensacolaandNewOrleans.( continued ) During World War II local citizens supported their government by working together in production or service sectors such as fishing ports or munitions factories while remaining largely SILENT about what was taking place behind closed doors within their own communities4 which continues up until today; some may still have fragments of “ Secrets ” still hidden away among family members who are sworn not to discuss any personal information related to our ancestors past without express written consent from both Parties involved5
In 1803, General Joseph E. Johnston arrived in Mandeville from Georgia with a force of over 60 cannon and 5,000 men. He founded the town on the bluff above the Mississippi River. The first white settler was Andrew Jackson. A school was built in 1807 and a courthouse in 1812. The town prospered until the Civil War when it lost its importance due to Confederate control of Louisiana.
