Mandeville, Louisiana is a city in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Jefferson Parish and home to the Mandeville Civic Center and the University of New Orleans. The name "Mandeville" is thought to be derived from a French word meaning "tree-of-life." The first European to visit what is now Mandeville were some African American sailors who landed there in 1699 on their way back from a Spanish expedition. They named the area after Jean Baptiste de Mandeville, Sieur de La Salle's officer on that trip. The town began as an agricultural community with corn, cotton, and tobacco production being its mainstay for many years. A post office was established in 1824 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1930. In 1848, the town became part of Jefferson Parish when it was formed from parts of Lafourche Parish. During World War I (1914-18), Mandeville served as one of several U.S military commands located near Vicksburg, Mississippi which were under control of General John J Pershing during World War I. After Vicksburg fell to Confederate forces on April 9, 1865 – less than two months before Napoleon III's coronation in France – much of Mandeville lay within Union lines under occupation by Ulysses S Grant's army; however most residents returned home by early November 1865 once Sherman's army had withdrawn from Vicksburg surrendered it on October 15th less than week prior . Upon liberation by General Robert E Lee and his Confederate Army following four days long siege at Petersburg (April 14-17 1865) little remained but ashes and debris including homes entire streetscape although still visible only from air photos taken during reconstruction process which began shortly thereafter

Mandeville was settled in 1804 by a group of Frenchmen led by Colonel Jean-Baptiste Lamarque. The town was named after the French general and political leader, Louis-Jacques Mandeville. The town is located on the Mississippi River, about 20 miles west of New Orleans. Mandeville's early history is intertwined with that of New Orleans. The two towns were both founded as French trading posts along the river systems which connected them. In 1718, General Philippe Auguste de Lesseps founded what would become New Orleans, and in 1721, Colonel Lamarque established Mandeville as his new headquarters on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1804, Louisiana was acquired by Great Britain from France following the Seven Years' War. As part of this acquisition, Louisiana became an integral part of British North America. This formed a unique relationship between Canada and Louisiana which continued until 1898 when America gained its independence from Great Britain. As part of its transition to independence, America began to lose control over its south central area including what is now Louisiana. This included much of what is now known as New Orleans and parts of Baton Rouge and Shreveport. In 1800, Congress passed an act providing for Assumption or assumption into full legal status by all United States territories including Louisiana; however, assimilationist policies were enacted throughout most American territoryados during this period (e.g., Mexican governors refused to sign assimilationist documents). Mandevelde residents did their best to maintain close ties with their ancestral home in France while they awaited clarification on their rights under Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order 9981 establishing American Indian Territory east of Mexico City on July 10th 1850 (the "Trail of Tears"). Many Mandevilleians fought in western Texas during that conflict; many others emigrated to various parts of North America before finally settling down in our present day country around 1870-1910s inclusive (See: Research Paper #2: Demographics Of The Mandevilles Of Lafourche Parish)).
Mandeville was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de La Salle. The town was named for the biblical figureMandeville, who lived in India and preached Christianity to the native peoples. In 1802, Robert S. Livingston, Baron Livingston of Flatlands purchased the land that now makes up Mandeville from the Laclede family. The area became a part of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005.
